Paignton Zoo Baby Giraffe

There were rumours and Janica grew very round! A "nursery" area was prepared a couple of weeks ago.

The baby was expected but the pregnancy was not publicised in case something went wrong.

From the local Herald Express today:

A BABY giraffe at Paignton zoo has been named by his keepers.
The two-week-old male calf has been called Tonda, which means 'worthy of praise'.
The zoo says the word is Latin and used as a short form of Antonius in the Czech and Slovak regions, which is where his mother, Janica, came from.
The baby was the first giraffe birth since a fire four years ago which killed three of the animals including a three-week-old female.
Herald Express readers raised £7,453.08 in memory of the three giraffes.
A zoo spokesman said: "The giraffe keepers picked the name. They had to deal with the fire and the aftermath.
"Seeing the youngster born now, four years on, is a very emotional time for them.
"We felt it is only right that they should get to name the first baby giraffe of this new era."
