Bandicoots!!

Hi All,

I am doing research on northern brown bandicoots. I am planning to keep them in aviaries. The floor is concrete though. Could anyone tell me what sort of furniture can be used for bandicoots? Also, if I should use saw dust as bedding or soil?

I have only ever kept southern browns, so this information is based on them. you must use aviaries with atleast a 60cm high galv/corrugatted iron kick plate, other wise they freak out too much when you walk past. I also had a concrete floor so i put 15cm of Sand/loam then covered that in about 3cm of leaf mulch, i furnish them with lomandra grasses, hollowlogs and branches for climbing, i use logs instead of nesting boxes but nesting boxes would be fine.
Mine used gum leaves and other native leaves for nesting aswell as a little bit of meadow hay. i dont use much sawdust as sometimes it irritates their skin.
A word of advice they will squeeze through anything so be careful!
 
Thanks a lot for your advice! Actually the height of the aviaries I am going to use is about 180 cm. They were used before for rats. I am still concerned about the edges of the aviaries which are attached to the concrete floor, although the cages look heavy and the edges seem to be attached very well. I do not want them to hurt their nose. I am also keeping males and they are very naughty. Do you have any photos of the aviaries with the furniture you used? It would be better if it the photos have the cooties in the aviaries.

I am in the process of moving house, so when i finish the move i will try and dig up the photos. Once you have the dirt butted up to the metal there is a very small risk of them hurting their noses.

What exactly are you researching?
 
Ok thanks! I am doing my research on the effect of heat stress on male bandicoots. I will have to keep them for about three months in captivity. I wish you good luck in your new house! How about you? Were you doing research on bandicoots?
 
I kept and bred the southerns for the Pet Market and Zoo/Wildlife parks. In South Australia private individuals are allowed to keep any native species other than dingoes if they can prove they have the knowledge and skill to gain the permit to.
