The government was working on declaring some 1,743 square kilometres of area, adjacent to St Martin’s Island, as Marine Protected Area for conserving biodiversity in the region.

Environment minister Md Shahab Uddin said this at a webinar marking World Tourism Day on Sunday.

He said that the government had also declared the 1,738 square kilometres of Swatch of No Ground in the South Bay of Bengal as a Marine Protected Area for conservation and breeding of endangered marine dolphins, whales, and sharks.
