The old female Brown Bear MISCHA has passed away.
BÄRENWALD Müritz on Instagram: "Unfortunately, we have some sad news to share with you. With a heavy heart, we had to say goodbye to Mascha. Mascha had been suffering from age-related health problems for several years, which could be treated well with medication. Since returning from her last hibernation, however, her health deteriorated significantly, causing her increasing and obvious discomfort when roaming around her enclosure. Despite intensive pain therapy, the symptoms of her arthritis could unfortunately not be alleviated as hoped. On the recommendation of the veterinary team from IZW Berlin and in consultation with FOUR PAWS, we decided not to prolong Mascha’s suffering. Mascha came to us in 2006, along with her partner, Otto. Both came from a private keeping in Germany, where they were kept in difficult conditions in a small concrete enclosure with bars. After arriving at our sanctuary, they were able to enjoy a life close to nature for the first time. In particular, during the spring, we often watched them playing happily in the pond. After Otto's death in August 2022, Mascha initially withdrew noticeably to grieve. However, thanks to the loving care of the animal caretakers, she gradually returned to her everyday life. At 31 years old, Mascha was our oldest resident and, together with Otto, was one of the first bears to find a species-appropriate home at BÄRENWALD Müritz. Rest in peace, Mascha! We will miss you. . . . Credits: Riccardo and Marie Maywald #BÄRENWALDMüritz #rip #farewell"
