Hello,

So this is deeply embarassing! I visited about a month ago and went in the bat caves and had a terrible time actually seeing in the enclosure, there's a section in the middle where you go through the plastic into a bit that resembles the exhibit equivalent of a bird hideout but the bats fly freely through it - my hand caught on the plastic (bit that serves as a door) and I felt a sharp scratch as I reached for it to stop it falling on the person behind me.

But a bat flew right past my hand at the same time. I swear I didn't tamper with them or anything akin to that, I was respectful and distant the entire time I swear this isn't some elaborate cover for me having tried to touch anything as if I had I'd have already been to the doctors just in case - I mentioned the dark above simply because it somewhat fuels my fear that I could have accidentally bothered one as I grabbed the plastic as they were on the wall around me. I walked away without injury and I do truly believe that it was the plastic I scratched my hand on, no visible injury from doing so but given the nature of the exhibit I've been mildly concerned since then.

Everything I can find says the chance of developing anything from such an encounter at such a reputable zoo is low and vaccines are expensive and apparently altogether rather unpleasant to deal with alongside not something you wish to have if medically unnecessary but the worry has persisted.

I was aware of this forum from people at the zoo I used to volunteer with using it so I thought I'd take a shot in the dark tat someone more knowledgeable than me and more clued into the specific safety of this exhibit might see this.

I would suggest you contact the zoo direct , I am sure they will put your mind at rest and give the correct advice.
I feel like a bit of an idiot for not thinking of that! I looked at their contact information and I suppose it was just a thing of none of the emails jumped out as fitting the above post? And in truth as someone who wants to work in the field eventually I was just really embarassed.

Thank you.

Firstly, the fact you feel the need to clarify this unprompted is rather odd and not the sort of thing that occurs to someone with a clear conscience :D

Secondly, although you are almost certainly correct that you merely caught your hand on the plastic, if you have any doubts in your mind we are not the people you should consult and nor is the zoo; you should seek medical advice from a professional.

"Vaccines are expensive"? This isn't the US. I think someone is having us on....

Offhand I think the full course of the rabies vaccine costs about £240 - or £80 per dose.

Not that it is relevant here - as you note, this is likely a troll.... or someone who is panicking after doing something they shouldn't have.

My conscience is completely clear it was more so because if this was the case then it would have been a super freak accident and I'm aware that would sound wild? I didn't touch a bat, I'm not that stupid. If I had I'd have run straight to my GP or 111 or whatever would get me immediate treatment because I wouldn't want to play with the risks of that. I respect animals, I'm not someone who goes around touching them and I elaborated as frankly the logical assumption would surely be if someone was worried about rabies that they'd touched the animals? I was trying to understand if there was a chace of transfer from it flying past my hand and that causing something to spread.

And I'm a student with £70 to my name who won't be getting anymore money until mid January, so yes even if I go to superdrug the full course is £220.50 which is more than I have. It's absolutely not me trolling - I get anxious about stuff and this was stuck in my head on a loop over the past week and I essentially came here in the hopes people who actually know stuff would be able to go: yeah that's not how that's spread, you're an idiot don't worry.

I'm aware this is a stupid question and a stupid thread but it was one born out of distress and stupidity and anxiety and not trolling. I genuinely didn't know where else to go and tried searching for simialr threads and saw one a couple of years ago from a concerned mother regarding her daughter.

Sorry for wasting all of your time, I was just genuinely panicking and trying to go down as many avenues as I could think of.

I very much doubt the zoo would allow public access to the bats if they had rabies, they would be quarantined and tested before be released in the caves in the first place
It is a notifiable disease so if anyone caught it through contact with the bats the zoo would be told

There really is no point in making such comments - or indeed continuing this thread at all.
It should have been taken down or frozen in some way, already.

Quite; the OP has been told that if they are genuinely concerned they should seek medical advice rather than anonymous forum advice, and there really isn't any need for the thread to remain active beyond this point :)

Locking.
