Bay cat caught on camera !

Did someone mention a little-known species of small carnivore? :p My ears were itching.

Looking rather like a short-legged Temminck's Cat, I'd suggest.

They do look very alike; I believe that for all intents and purposes the bay cat is an island-dwarf form of the last common ancestor of the two taxa. They are significantly smaller than the Asiatic Golden Cat.

We all have our little quirks ;), and I have to confess that I tend to avoid describing Pardofelis temmincki as a Golden Cat - consensus these days is that it isn't that closely related to Proflis aurata!

Then again, consensus these days is that the African Golden Cat is more properly Caracal aurata :p my only real reason for persisting with Asiatic Golden Cat is that when talking about the subspecies, it sounds much better to say, for instance, Tibetan Golden Cat than to say Tibetan Temminck's Cat!

Excellent :D grinning ear to ear at that photo.

here's a new story about bay cats. I chose this specific article because it has two photos on it, one of which is a black bay cat:
Rare bay cat species found in many parts of state – BorneoPost Online | Borneo , Malaysia, Sarawak Daily News | Largest English Daily In Borneo
Sarawak Forest Department researchers recently found the rare bay cat species ‘Pardofelis Badia’ in Lundu.

Sarawak Forest Department director Sapuan Ahmad said the team was led by lead researcher Dr Ahmad Ampeng, and similar findings had been recorded in Mulu National Park, Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, Pulong Tau National Park and Anap Muput.

The research on this bay cat species formed part of the 5-year Heart of Borneo initiative.

These discoveries, Sapuan said, proved the population of this cat species is scattered across the state.

“By understanding the relations between these species and its habitat, the findings affirmed the vast richness of the state’s forests. At the same time, State Forestry will continue to work hard to add more Totally Protected Area to its list.”

Sapuan said the findings of the species opened up more research opportunities, especially in terms of physique and colour of the species.

He added that DNA tests needed to be done to differentiate the species, but such tests were hard to conduct.

I will find myself a bay cat one of these days....

oh, you guys are mean! The key is to look for something else, maybe a red junglefowl, then I will find a bay cat.

Folks would it not be grand if our dear Chlidonias would! :) He would surely put a nice little report for us all to enjoy the moment!

I just came across this video on Youtube, uploaded a year ago. Not sure if it has been posted on here before, but I thought TLD and devilfish might like it.
