Beale Park Beale Wildlife Park 2024

It was on my last visit. I am planning on going this weekend so will say if anything has happened.

The loris did go earlier this year. This did lead to a bit of a switch where the cuscus moved to where the loris used to be. The armadillos then moved to replace the cuscus. The naked mole rats, mouse lemurs and beaded lizards were still there as of my last visit.

I was able to fit in a shorter than normal visit this morning (other plans this afternoon). Still time to go round the whole park though.

Notes
  • The squirrel monkeys have moved to where the hyrax and dwarf mongoose used to be. That enclosure previously had signs about a new species coming soon. I don't know if that has fallen through or if things have changed and a new species will now go where the squirrel monkeys were previously.
  • The kookaburras appear to have left. Their aviary was empty and the signs had gone.
  • The duprasi has re-appeared (I presume it must have been off show for a while). It is now in human nature where the common toads used to be.
  • A couple of changes noted in my previous visit appear to have been temporary.
    • The ringed teals and white faced whistling ducks are now back in the turkey vulture aviary.
    • The fence dividing the porcupine exhibit in two has gone.
  • To answer @dillotest0's question, The Twilight Room is still open. Species list below.
    • Six-banded armadillo.
    • Ground cuscus
    • Naked mole rat
    • Grey Mouse Lemur
    • Rio Fuerte Beaded Lizard

Had a good visit to Beale today, was fairly busy though people were well spread out.

There were at least three wallabies in the former reindeer enclosure, though they were unsigned. There were only a couple of the Arctic foxes visible including during feeding so not sure if they still have all three.

It was a shame to see the Banded Mongoose gone. The prairie dogs have made short work of digging up the joined enclosure and making the most of the larger space

There were no animals in the enclosure next to the Prairie dogs that has variously had red footed tortoise and ferrets in the past.

Was interesting to see the new Snowy Owl enclosure with a lot more room than the previous one

The newer Sulcata tortoise enclosure is a good size and it was easy to get good views. Was also good to see the python in it's new and larger space.

Enjoyed seeing the squirrel monkeys as I still rather miss them from Whipsnade and it's not always easy to find places with them. Not the largest space for them but they are a small group at present and there is a good amount for them to do inside and out.

The dwarf mongoose and Hyrax offer good views in their new space in Human Nature, though the glass is poor for photos.

Didn't see either of the Chacoan Mara groups or the baby, but was good to see the most recent Guanaco arrival feeding from mum.

There were Padawan Peacock pheasants and what looked like the Crimson Bellied Conures in the former Kookaburra enclosure, neither were signed but probably the birds from the larger aviary opposite the Tayra as they were not signed in there. Was a shame not to see Scarlet Ibis, Purple Swamp Hen or Javan Sparrows any more but was enjoyable as usual to see the Rufous Laughing Thrush pair in the other aviary and the new Budgies were active and noisy.

I did only see 2 arctic foxes on my last visit. As the 3 are all brothers from the same litter it wouldn’t surprise me if one has moved on for breeding purposes.

Sadly when we visited towards the end of September a staff member told us the third one had passed away.

Sad to hear that. They weren't that old. That is why I thought one might have moved on.

Had another day off today using up leftover annual leave. I visited as I was wondering whether or not Marwell's acquisition of Chacoan mara could have come from Beale, given that they are not common in zoos.

That remains unanswered as the Pampas Walk, where one of the mara enclosures is located, was closed off due to the path being partially flooded.

Other notes.
  • New species - Common marmosets. They appear to have indirectly replaced the burrowing owls. The timneh parrots have moved to where the burrowing owls used to be. The marmosets are where the parrots have moved from. They haven't got signs yet and they were shut inside. They are very inquisitive as they came up to the window when I looked at them.
    • Considering that this is next to where the squirrel monkeys have just moved to, I wonder if there is a plan to make this a primate area.
  • I concur with @Lafone's comments about the peacock pheasants and conures in the former kookaburra aviary. They haven't got signs yet either. I also believe that they have moved from the large mixed aviary opposite the tayras. I don't think they are new additions.
  • The playground equipment next to the guanacos was being dismantled. I don't know if it is going to be replaced or if the area will be used for a different purpose.
  • The path next to the old reindeer paddock is now blocked off by a gate.

Given, that squirrel monkeys carry Saimiriine Herpesvirus1(HV2) and easily passed on to Marmosets, which can cause death, i do hope there is a substantial barrier between the two species
