"Beasts And Men" Carl Hagenbeck autobio in English on line

Wonderful news.

This was the first animal/zoo book that I ever read. And re-read and re-read! I was in my first year at High School and contiually borrowed it from the school library. My class-mates thought that I was mad. [Most of them still do].

I remember that the book was published in 1908 - the year of my father's birth.

I have searched for a copy of this book all my life.

Thank you internet and thank you Zooplantman for posting this great news.

Gees, that took a long time to download, kept cutting out after about 20MB, but got there in the end. Looks like a great book, thanks for letting us know about it!

I also added links for other historical stuff in the Bronx Zoo thread, the London Zoo thread, the Paris Jardin des Plantes thread and the Franklin Park Zoo (Boston) thread

'Beasts and Men'

After many years I ran a copy of this book to earth on the Isle of Wight in 2004, got it for 35 pounds

I, too, have a copy of this English Language translation of Carl Hagenbeck’s autobiography.

I’ve been told, though, that this is very much abridged and that the original German version contains much more detail.

I would be very interested, please, if one of our German members can provide any details from the German version about Hagenbeck’s experience with leopard x puma hybrids; the information in the English translation is frustratingly sketchy. Any information would be much appreciated, please.
