Beetle Care & Conservation, new article

Thanx Frank,

As a zoo volunteer I always make a habit of attracting interest in the small and beautiful (and not just your usual mega vertebrates).

I quite enjoyed the article. Short and to-the-point. Which got me going though is ... which UK zoos - as they are - are involved in the European stag beetle breeding programme (to the best of my knowledge it still escapes being an EEP/ESB within EAZA, just for the island form D. hercules from the Lesser Antilles).

Hi Kifaru,

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.

The Universities of London and York are involved in the project I mentioned; unfortunately, no zoos of which I'm aware (but I've not done a thorough check).

Re smaller creatures, I feel much the same., Here in the US, insect-keeping is still in it's infancy. I've set up a few invert exhibits for the Bronx Zoo, but, except for a summer butterfly aviary, there is still no major invert exhibit!

Japan is the place for zoogoers who enjoy insects; the Tama Zoo blew me away - a giant insect house and an outdoor insect aviary that was larger than those most zoos devote to birds!...others just as impressive.

Best regards, Frank
