Thanks for sharing. Good to hear a new species of saki primate is gaining a foothold in Europe! Kudos to yr team.

That's what I was thinking, is this a real European first or is this another case of lazy newswriters? According to ZooTierliste many of the former holders of this species never bred them (Cologne did breed a hybrid of them), but some of the other former holder might have...

Does anyone know?

Hi Jwer, we have researched the subject quite extensively and can't find any evidence that they have been bred in any other collection in Europe! This includes former holders and international yearbooks etc

It's not to say that they may have been and we are happy enough to be proven wrong :) So any information is welcome!

On a personal note they have to be one of best primate species to work with! Extremely active, vocal and entertaining to watch as a group!

Hi Al, not wanting to dampen anything obviously, but I was just curious as to how viable the population was. There is only the pair at Colchester further to your 1.2 + offspring, so surely there will need to be an import of fresh blood in the near-ish future?

Still, it is incredible news and they are a fantastic species :)
 
Great to hear some people actually care if their press release is actually factually correct :)

And "saki" and "active" in the same sentence almost sounds like you're kidding. The white-faced saki's I've seen are almost always looking like they're stuffed toys. Sounds like you're just trying to make us jealous :)

Hi Javan rhino, that is a fair point! There is a lot of interest from a number of other European collections in the species, further importations may be possible as well as ties with the American, Chinese and South African captive populations!

The important factor is that the husbandry and management of the species has been cracked, there is an interest in the species in EAZA institutions and that they are breeding :)

We do take pride in our marketing and as zoo nerds staff like to get our facts straight! :)

Their behaviour is much more capuchin like compared to that of a white-faced saki! The first female to have give birth was seen doing a cart wheel playing in the branches the day after the birth with baby holding on tight!

I was lucky to look after them when they first arrived at the zoo and their current main keeper 'moloch gibbon' who's also on zoochat also thinks they are amazing!

We hope to add some video footage to Facebook soon!
 
In 2012, Belfast Zoo celebrated Hover 90 births, including Foyle and Ballyeve (13.06.12* Finn x Niamh) the Rothschild’s giraffes. Can anybody tell me the birthdate of Foyle and
who the mother is?

Foyle was born on the 25th of June, to Finn and Neja, a pure female from Aalborg, Denmark
