Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo news 2024

Damn; bro couldn't wait until I came on down lol

Tho seriously, my condolences to the staff as I'm sure he was a favorite

Such sad news; I'm so lucky I got to see this species in London in 2014. At the time I didn't realise how special the animals I was looking at were.
Exactly. I must have seen the species literally hundreds of times at London, but now seems unlikely that I will ever see one again. Really makes one think!

This is very sad news - I remember visiting Berlin in 2019 and the BBP was a real highlight. It was not long ago this species "felt" somewhat common in European Zoos, but having looked at ZTL it doesn't seem that this was ever actually the case.

Fresh imports seem somewhat unlikely but with Berlin you just never know. What are the priorities for pigs in European collections these days?

I believe the visayan warty pig and babirusa are the priority species. Warthog and red river hogs have been bred and sent to research centers/universities to research African Swine Fever.

Warthog, red river hog, visayan warty pig & babirusa are the eep managed/priority species.

Very sad indeed. On the topic of primates, what's next for Berlin? I seem to remember a primate house renovation being flung around as an idea some time ago. Now that the rhino house is complete I imagine they'll be wanting to move on to the next thing.

Personally I think improvements for either the great apes or the elephants should be a priority.

If the former wildebeest paddock at Tierpark is indeed for okapi as has been suggested, it seems logical that the enclosure improvements at the zoo might be expedited (which does ride on a lot of assumptions).

During my visit in early January, there were signs around the cat house regarding the planned expansions so assumedly that will happen sooner rather than later.

The ape and elephant developments will be massive undertakings, the latter especially. I don't believe there's any plans in the short-term, but others will likely know more.

Does anybody know what the planned expansion for the cat house is, given that it has just been redeveloped at great cost?

A new enclosure for the elephants, perhaps over the bridge, has been discussed for some time. Their facilities are quite poor when you compare to the great ones in Europe but I would be surprised if this was the priority given they'll probably want to market the new elephant house at Tierpark for a while.

Ape redevelopments would be particularly welcome. The Gorilla enclosure is okay, but really is just that, especially compared to those at Frankfurt, Koln & Leipzig. The Orang and Bonobo enclosure are really rather poor, to be honest.

What's going on with the bears at the moment? That part of the park seems rather empty compared to previous years, although the Polar Bear enclosure was poor.

They received a trio of brown bears last year.

An overhead bridge for the jaguar to access the lake out the front of the restaurant is the main one, and is currently well signed. Both the leopard and tiger exhibits are planned to be expanded I believe, but admittedly the plans are somewhat vague.
