Best and Worst Italian Zoos and Aquariums

Hello friends! I’m relatively new here on ZC and I have a few questions. Living in Northern Italy (near Milan), I’ve only visited Parco Natura Viva, Le Cornelle, La Torbiera, Zoom Torino and Bioparco di Roma, which are indeed some of the best. From what I know zoos that are members of EAZA/UIZA are good/decent, but I heard mixed opinions on non-memeber zoos. So in your opinion, what are the best and worst (in terms of animal welfare and conservation) zoos and aquariums, especially non-members, here in Italy? Thanks!:)

Out of over 900 zoos i have only visited around 20 or so in Italy ,but my thought is that things have improved enormously from 30 years ago...if you live near Milan you should definitely visit Oasi di Sant Alessio at Vialone - a wonderful little zoo, with a number of special species. Probably the only zoo in the world where Great Crested Grebes can be viewed from an underwater vantage point (and they`re captive bred, but not in Vialone).

Thanks man!:) I’m curious, what other Italian zoos did you visit?

I’ve heard of Oasi di Sant’Alessio and I’ll definetely visit it. I can surely agree on the recent improvements I witnessed especially at Le Cornelle and Bioparco di Roma, and from what I know Napoli is also rising again.

Ive not been to Zoom but have done all the others you mention. In addition, Pistoia, Punta Verde,
Valcorba,Capeller, Tropicarium Jessolo,Trieste Aquarium,Pombia Safari,Milan Aquarium plus Sant Alessio of course. So a total of 12 - not quite as many as i thought (but I was guessing).

Wow very impressive! I hear Tropicarium is quite good while people say Trieste is not. I’ve been to Pombia as I child, but last year the park was bought by the same company of the Fasano safari (not very good imo) so I’m afraid of its future.

Trieste was very much less than I thought it would be..but i was headed to Slovenia/Austria anyway. As for Pombia it is like many other safari parks (many look pretty much the same), but then the new owners now also own Le Cornelle which is very nice...I know the vet for both places,he is very much an animal person so I am sure he will have his eye on developments at the safari park.

By animal person i mean a zoo person. I could also have done Sea Life Jesselo but they were closing just as I got there...no great loss, they are all pretty much the same as well.

I really hope for the best then, especially considering the major improvements in recent years at Le Cornelle.
