This is just a bit of fun to judge the general consensus on the best enclosure for Asian Elephants in Benelux I have added a few photos from the gallery to make it easier for members to compare the different exhibits. If anyone wants to make an argument for a particular enclosure, please feel free to do so. Also, I would encourage people to perhaps list the enclosures in order of what they determine to be the best.

I think Emmen is a clear favorite. Their large house and paddock is beautiful. Planckendael, Amersfoort, Rotterdam and Dierenrijk are both also very nice and spacious. Pairi Daiza is also very spacious, but poorer in vegetation. Burgers is very nice for old cows. Antwerp is relatively small. I don't like Amsterdam. Their architecture of the paddock seems to me unsuitable for elephants.

Looks like it's down to Planckendael or Emmen. Going to park my vote with Emmen for now unless someone can change my mind...

I haven't visited Emmen personally yet, but based on the pictures I am not a big fan of the Elephant enclosures, being very narrow and with hardly any structure. The fact that they keep multiple groups separate (young bulls, breeding herd), it means that they have to rotate them between indoors, outdoors and behind the scenes. I also still haven't seen Planckendael's new enclosure, but might be persuaded to vote for them.

I am personally a fan of Amersfoort, the indoor and outdoor enclosures are larger than they appear on the pictures and as they keep only one small breeding group the animals have full access to both indoors and outdoors the whole day. In addition the enclosure has been set up in such a way that they are free to use both enclosures 23 hours a day. It is also a great example of how to make an elephant enclosure on a budget.

Blijdorp used to be the first to modernize their Elephant indoor enclosures towards more spacious areas back 25 years ago, but nowadays it is somewhat aged.... Burgers' Zoo has very good accomodation for its elderly cows, but indoors is basic and it cannot compete with the breeding institutions. It is however the one that provides most tree cover of them all.

Like in many other cases I am not a fan of the Pairi Daiza enclosures and their husbandry (extremely hands-on and just randomly grouping Elephants without investing in pure matriarchal herds). IF we would be counting elephant statues though, it would win easily. Their enclosure might be the largest, but is barely structured and hardly provides any shade. Scientific studies have shown that size isn't really important to stimulate active behaviour, but feeding opportunities and enclosure structure are. There has been some improvement on that in PD, but the focus is still more on temples than on elephants.

I was fortunate enough to see all 9 of these exhibits last summer on my epic tour of zoos in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. I'll rank them from worst to best:

# 9 - Antwerp is easily the worst elephant exhibit on the list. The enclosure is far too small for any elephants, let alone the two young males that I saw there last summer. I suppose that some could argue that the zoo having elephants is a positive thing as there is always a need for bachelors to be housed somewhere, but the whole elephant complex is not up to modern standards and it should be shut down in my opinion and converted to another species.

# 8 - Artis Amsterdam has a stunning architectural statement with its elephant exhibit and I love the look of it from a visitor perspective, especially the amazing pool that slopes down to the main pathway. However, the indoor stalls are ancient and the big Fred Flintstone rocks and smallish space leave this zoo low on the list. Both Antwerp and Artis have elephants, but will they both still have them in 20 years?

# 7 - Burgers is a leafy, shady exhibit that is perfect for a couple of elderly elephants, but it is not in the same ballpark as the more modern habitats on this list. It's more than adequate for now, but what will become of this enclosure in a decade or two ?

# 6 - Pairi Daiza has an immense sandy desert for their elephants, with a few temples and not much else on the horizon. In terms of space the enclosures there are impressive, but in terms of management of the animals (hands-on) it's all very dodgy in the year 2020. The amazing thing is that Pairi Daiza has close to 20 Asian elephants and perhaps people are voting with that in consideration as admittedly it is an extraordinary total!

# 5 - Dierenrijk was a really surprising zoo for me, with top-notch exhibits for the likes of chimpanzees, Barbary macaques, brown bears, polar bears and many other species. The brand-new greater one-horned rhino exhibit there with several types of hoofstock all together is fantastic. As for the elephants, they share a vast field with chital, red deer and crab-eating macaques, which is kind of bizarre as the outdoor enclosure is almost completely barren of anything. The zoo would be higher on the list if they had a mountain of rocks there for the primates (like at Beekse Bergen for that zoo's African elephants) or even some huge sand dunes for the 4 different species to explore.

# 4 - Amersfoort has elephants as a highlight of what is a quirky, interesting zoo. The indoor and outdoor areas are both packed with rubbing posts and various enrichment options, with piles of sand for the elephants to rummage around in. The exhibit could be a bit larger, but overall it's more than adequate and there is even a section of the indoor viewing where elephants are seen through glass. How often does that happen in the zoo world?

# 3 - Emmen has an outstanding indoor pool and check out the photo on this thread. It's a huge water structure and the indoor and outdoor areas are very nicely done and everything is pretty much brand-new. However, the style of the exhibit is odd, with the elephants being a bit limited because I'm not sure how often they navigate the oddly terraced landscape. All the elephants during my visit hung around on the upper sections, although perhaps they really do utilize all the space. A more frequent visitor would have to answer that question.

# 2 - Rotterdam has an excellent elephant exhibit, with the outdoor area the right mixture of terrain. It's not flat as a pancake as Pairi Daiza or Dierenrijk and instead Blijdorp Zoo has tall metal and wooden 'trees' outdoors where the zoo hangs enrichment items. There are rocks and piles of sand and enough space for the elephants to roam around. The indoor area, revolutionary a quarter-century ago, is looking a bit aged but overall I think that Rotterdam has a slightly larger total area than Amersfoort and better landscaping than Emmen and so second place for Rotterdam is where I'm placing it. This is such a great zoo and it's probably underrated by Euro zoo nerds these days. A pair of very good exhibits (elephants and gorillas) are going to be overhauled as part of the zoo's '2030 Master Plan' and Rotterdam's current elephant exhibit is already one of the best.

# 1 - Planckendael is the winner in my opinion. This is the centerpiece of the large Asian loop at this terrific zoo, with the elephants seen from multiple angles as visitors walk along a long trail and get glimpses of elephants through the undergrowth. The indoor area is decent, with a deep pool, but it is the outdoor zone that excels. There is a main image of the elephants up high in a sort of viewing tower that showcases the exhibit very well. Then visitors go all the way around the habitat, almost as if the humans are on a trek through the 'jungle' to find elephants.

If I look to both indoor and outdoor enclosure my vote goes to Emmen. Real large indoor and good outdoor enclosure !
Second and third place are shared by Planckendael and Amersfoort ( both good outdoor-enclosures and good indoor-enclosure although IMO not as good as Emmens indoor-enclosure.
Also real good IMO are both Dierenrijk and Blijdorp/Rotterdam so they share the 4th and 5th place in my list.
Artis Amsterdam comes on place 6 because the elephants have a nice outdoor-enclosure but th indoor enclosure is to small.
Antwerps indoor and outdoor enclosures are both to small but for a small bachelor-group it fullfills an important part in the breeding-programm.
From Burgers Arnhem and Pairi Daiza I've sofar not seen the indoor-enclosures so can't give a fair judgment but Pairi Daizas outdoor enclosures are large but stuctureless and Burger's outdoor-enclosure is also Oke and by housing post-reproductive female(s?) they also fullfill an important role in the breeding programm.

My list:

9. Antwerpen: small outdoors, small indoors: way too small.
8. Artis: outdoor was terribly small, but I love the new part, still not big enough for 4 elephants though. Indoor is terrible, just horrible.
7. Burgers: beautiful outdoor, ugly indoor. Not big but big enough for 2 elephants.
6. Pairi Daiza: boring outdoor, but big enough. Indoor is good as well.
5. Amersfoort: outdoor is big enough, not that special. Indoor is beautiful totally love that one.
4. Rotterdam: outdoor looks good, but could have been bigger. Indoor looks very good comparing to some other ones.
3. Dierenrijk: boring outdoor, but big enough. Great indoor. Also nice that they have monkeys and deers combined with the elephants.
2. Planckendaell: huge outdoor, huge indoor. Almost perfect, one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately for Planckendaell the best one I’ve ever seen is in this list as well.
1. Emmen: best Asian elephant exhibit I’ve ever seen. Beautiful huge outdoors, and just fabulous indoors, only Planckendaell comes a bit close to this one, so amazing!

Score update. This is the closest poll so far and Planckendael currently lead by 4 votes over Emmen. We have had some brilliant overviews of the different enclosures here with arguments for different winners. It is clear there are a few excellent exhibits in this category.

let me first say i only visited Artis, Burgers' zoo, Rotterdam zoo and Emmen. For the others my opinion is bases on the pictures in this thread.

-9 Antwerp: Way too small.
-8 Pairi Daiza: Boring outdoor, yes it's big but they do house a large herd. Also i'm not a fan of the husbandry of the elephants there, especially the hands-on.
-7 Burgers'Zoo: Nice shady exhibit, perfect for housing a couple of older cows. But it is a bit outdated. Can't compare to other more modern exhibits.
-6 Dierenrijk: Large enclosure but really flat and a bit boring. Indoors is better than the zoo mentioned before.
-5 Amersfoort: Has a nice indoor en outdoor with lots rubbing posts and enrichment items. Gets shade from the trees next to the enclosure. I just think it's a little bit on the small side.
-4 Rotterdam: I like the terrain of this enclosure. lots of rocks and rubbing post with enrichment items. But overall it looks outdated, especially the indoors.
-3 Artis: I really love the outside enclosure at Artis. it's really suitable for the elepants. It has a mud pool, a large swimming pool, rocks with different sorts of roughness and enrichment in those rocks. The rocks are also good for hiding from eachother or the wind and sun. The enclosure may look small but it certainly is big enough for the herd size they keep. It's even bigger then Amersfoort and Burgers' Zoo. The only thing what's not right is the inside. That is outdated and way too small. If that was better and bigger, and i believe they have plans for that, it would have been my #1.
-2 Planckendael: Judging from the photos it's a really nice enclosure. I like the terrain with the rocks and the trees. Also the inside with the pool is really nice. Unfortunately i haven't visited Planckendael. Maybe it gets higher on my list when i've seen it myself.
-1 Emmen: The best combination of inside and outside enclosure. Both are really nice and big. They can even keep two different groups(breeding & bull group). It has a lot of water, outside and inside, wich the elepants really seem to like and a nice terrain. Overall i think this is the best enclosure.

Comparing the photos of Emmen and Plankendael I wonder how the elephants experience the buildings? Emmen looks nicer but I wonder what the animals make of the constantly running waterfall? would the noise irritate them? And what of the acoustics of both buildings, they're quite different in structure and I presume noise in general would be experienced differently.
They're also very different with regards to light, Plankendael looks more subdued, perhaps forest like, Emmen is very bright in comparison.

Voting for Emme, because they house multiple groups which is both good for the breeding programme and for the audience, and because there is simply so much space and there's also some lovely enrichment built into the complex. A male from Rotterdam moved there and it cheared him up big time!

Poll closed. Congratulations to Planckendael on winning the vote for Best Asian Elephant enclosure in Benelux. This was a close contest with Emmen also performing well and losing by 5 votes in the end. This is Planckendael's second poll win after the first in the Bonobo poll.

Planckendael: 50.0%
Emmen: 34.4%
Pairi Daiza: 6.3%
Amersfoort: 3.1%
Artis: 3.1%
Rotterdam: 3.1%
