This is just a bit of fun to judge the general consensus on the best enclosure for Hippopotamuses in Germany. I have added a few photos from the gallery to make it easier for members to compare the different exhibits. If anyone wants to make an argument for a particular enclosure, please feel free to do so. Also, I would encourage people to list the enclosures in order of what they think is best.

I voted for Berlin in this poll. Frankfurt has an old-fashioned hippo enclosure that needs to be altered/bulldozed in the future, Cologne has a fantastic habitat that runs Berlin pretty close, Hannover's is just okay and that photo of the three hippos together is hilarious, Zoom Erlebniswelt is underrated (large land area and huge pool), and I've not been to Karlsruhe but it seems to be not much better than Frankfurt.

Does anyone know if Berlin and Cologne, arguably the two best options, are still mixed-species exhibits?

I believe both still are mixed species. Both were in my last visits this year and in 2021 respectively.

I voted for Gelsenkirchen. The outdoor enclosure has a nice size with a large land part and I really like the small island in the middle of the outdoor pool (used for feeding). The indoor enclosure is not as nice as Berlin or Cologne but defenatly better than the rest. The only thing I dislike is that there is very limited viewing for the outdoor enclosure if you don't use the boat ride.

For Berlin and Cologne the outdoor enclosures are lacking in water space which is why I wouldn't give them the top spot (Berlin being my favourite).

Hannover is alright but lacks in land space and if I remember correctly they always keep one of the animals in the indoor enclosure just so visitors can see a hippo underwater (only indoors has underwater vieweing).

I don't really like the others to much because of the limited space but obviously Frankfurt is way worse than Karlsruhe.

All of them have the best Nile Hippo enclosure in Germany! All that matters is that they have them and then they're my favorite exhibit in the country!:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:
I’ll take the bait but are you really saying this with a straight face with Frankfurt in mind?

Edit: since I already have been to three of these places I may as well put in my two cents and say that amongst the ones I saw I like Köln’s exhibit the most.

Poll closed. Congratulations to Berlin for having the Best Hippopotamus enclosure in Germany. There were a couple of other great hippo enclosures here like ZOOM and Koln, but they still didn't stand a chance against the iconic Hippodom. This is their first win, and definetely not the last.

Berlin: 61.9%
Zoom Erlebniswelt: 28.6%
Cologne: 7.1%
Karlsruhe: 2.4%
