At Emmen Zoo ( already a little closer to England 
) the large free-flight bird aviary and the AmeriCasa ( a kind of tropical hall ) is very good. Nice diverse collection and in the hall also a nocturnal part can be found.
So far the best I've seen.

Montpellier zoo (closer still to England) appears to have a great looking tropical hall.

I was wondering if anyone would do a theme like that in a zoo. Now I need to get to Houston.

It’s not the largest area ever, but I’m quite partial to Nashville Zoo’s Expedition Peru exhibit. Their Andean Bear facility is amazing!
My favorite is Amazon Rising at Shedd Aquarium.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo in NSW Australia used to have a mixed exhibit with Brazilian Tapir, Mara, Guanaco and Greater Rhea. It was always a highlight. They also had exhibits for Maned Wolf and Collared Peccary. Unfortunately all those species have been phased out now.
The Los Angeles exhibit that was mentioned earlier is great, it includes North America’s only bald uakari and has a few other rare species like Harpy Eagles, Giant Otters, Bairds Tapir, and many more. It’s also very well but and uses its surroundings very well.
Rotterdams Zoo 'Amazonica'is also a great exibit. Focused on butterflies but also Herps, Amphibians, Fish and other Invertebrates are housed in this huge dome.
