OK, so I've now started on my third country set: Germany. I hope you enjoy these new polls as much as I do. I will be making polls on the same species as the UK and Benelux.

This is just a bit of fun to judge the general consensus on the best enclosure for Sumatran Orangutans in Germany. I have added a few photos from the gallery to make it easier for members to compare the different exhibits. If anyone wants to make an argument for a particular enclosure, please feel free to do so. Also, I would encourage people to list the enclosures in order of what they think is best.

I felt like I had to separate Sumatran and Bornean orangs into two different polls because there were a bit too many enclosures IMO.

Unfortunately there are no photos of this enclosure in the gallery. If anyone can describe or provide a photo of the enclosure that would be great.

By the way, feel free to post your opinions on the enclosures here. I’d be more than happy to hear people’s thoughts on them.

Frankfurt Zoo has a lot of climbing opportunities for their Sumatran Orangutans, both indoors and outside in naturalistic surroundings. On a side note, when I was there in 2019 the zoo had Binturongs in with the orangs, which was neat to see.

Poll closed. Congratulations to Frankfurt for having the Best Sumatran Orangutan enclosure in Germany. A large indoor and outdoor enclosure and a mix with Binturong gave them the win. A mention to Erlebniswelt who came second with another mixed exhibit (With Hanuman Langur.)

Frankfurt: 53.6%
Erlebniswelt: 28.6%
Leipzig: 7.1%
Dortmund: 7.1%
Hellabrunn: 3.6%

Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund have very good inside enclosures. Outside... often lacking climbing opportunities. The plus of Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund is that you can split the enclosures (don't remember Frankfurt in that aspect at the moment). If you consider that according to new standards the aim is that zoos should get away from keeping orangutans in group structures it is a noteworthy aspect.

Frankfurt has 2 outdoor enclosures with ample climbin opportunities. It's indoor enclosure is also easily the most impressive imo with lots of height and it is one of the few enclosures where I have hardly seen the orangs on the ground.
