This is just a bit of fun to judge the general consensus on the best enclosure for Binturong's in the UK. I have added a few photos from the gallery to make it easier for members to compare the different exhibits. If anyone wants to make an argument for a particular enclosure, please feel free to do so. Also, I would encourage people to perhaps list the enclosures in order of what they determine to be the best.

Haven't seen many of these, Chester seems the most spacious. I can't for the life of me remember seeing it on my trip the other year.
Longleat's is pretty dire with the badly painted concrete wall behind and no foliage in the enclosure.

They share with the Sun Bears at Chester. So if you've seen their new(ish) enclosure in Islands, that's also the Binturong enclosure!

It's a mixed exhibit with their Sun Bears :)
 
I was actually wondering the other day if Binturong will gradually replace coati in UK collections over the next decade?

I agree that Longleats enclosure looks awful.

Are Chesters Binturong mixed with bears?

Is the criteria for winning this poll very similar to what it was for Red Panda? Access to trees, naturalistic setting, visibility etc?

Your correct, this exhibit was empty on my last visit, Feb 2020, the Binturong have been moved to the former Margay exhibit, between the Sun Bears and Magic Forest, and are still present in that exhibit as far as I'm aware. They are still listed on the website as well.
 
Do the binturongs at Chester have access to any of those living trees in the background of the photo? I can't tell whether they are inside the exhibit or not.

I'm pretty sure a good portion of them are in the exhibit.
 
Colchester also has sizable live trees for its Binturongs (not really seen in the previous photo - the exhibit is shared with Asian Small-clawed Otters, hence the pool). They climb pretty high in them, as shown in the attached photo taken last December.

Is there much interaction between the Sun Bears and Binturongs at Chester?

I will just put my crash helmet on....

Chester's exhibit won best Sun Bear exhibit because it IS exactly that, but happens to also hold binturong, which doesn't really make it a 'binturong exhibit'. If it didn't hold sun bear it would not be 5% of the size it is.

Likewise, Realm of the Red Ape was called that for a reason, the fact it has a couple of gibbons in their doesn't really make it a 'gibbon exhibit'.

Just my opinion obviously but I think those 2 examples are stretching things somewhat!

Genuine question - has anyone ever seen the Binturong use the outdoors areas at Chester?
