Results are in. Congratulations to Whipsnade on winning the vote for Best UK Pygmy Hippopotamus enclosure. It was a fairly comfortable win in the end and is Whipsnade's third Best enclosure win bringing it level currently with Chester. A mention should also be given to London who came second with I believe the most modern exhibit of the six.

Whipsnade: 57.7%
London: 26.9%
Marwell: 7.7%
Edinburgh: 7.7%

Colchesters picture does it dirty- its actually alright following some upgrades a few years ago. Tough you can't really blame them Kingdom Of The Wild was completed in 2001.

But when it comes to quality of display, I don't think any Hippo exhibits in the UK are particularly good e.g. we don't have a single underwater viewing design here.
This could possibly change- after the indoor upgrades completed for Pygmy Hippos at Colchester a few years back following the Patas monkeys moving out of the building, developments are currently taking place on the outdoors. I suspected this would include demolishing the Patas' outdoors (I don't know if it will but I assume so) but on my visit at the end of February, much to my shock I noticed that the current Pygmy Hippo outdoor area was being demolished. This should perhaps, come as no surprise considering this section of the enclosure is little more than a small grassy paddock with a little pool that has been reduced purely to a mud wallow. Considering the space now available you would like to think that this will be a great new addition to the Pygmy Hippo enclosure, to make it possibly one of the best in the country to go with our recent breeding record, which will hopefully only be improved by this development. I have know idea what this redevelopment will hold, I can only judge off the Wilds of Aisa building redevelopment, the new Crowned pigeon enclosure, and the Sun Bear complex completed in 2014 (Colchester Zoo's most recent major developments relevant to the Pygmy Hippos). I just hope that this will be some significant improvement. I am also sad because for me, Colchester Zoo's history and older exhibits (KoTW and EK) give it its character and many of these have overgone changes in the past few years (Chimpanzee Lookout (formerly Chimp World), Penguin Shores, Kingdom of The Wild, Lion Rock, Elephant Kingdom, Playa Patagonia). The last 2 listed may have changes so insignificant that non regular visitors don't notice but these are all changes that take a little bit away from the history of enclosure. That said I can't wait for the new Pygmy Hippo outside enclosure to open and I am heavily anticipating it and its quality.
