This is just a bit of fun to judge the general consensus on the best enclosure for Spider Monkeys in the UK. I have added a few photos from the gallery to make it easier for members to compare the different exhibits. If anyone wants to make an argument for a particular enclosure, please feel free to do so. Also, I would encourage people to list the enclosures in order of what they think is best.

If you want to vote for Amazona, Banham, Blackpool, Exmoor, Wales A&M S (either), Colchester, South Lakes, Five Sisters, Drayton Manor, Twycross (Black), Exotic Pet Refuge (either), Monkey World or Welsh Mountain please vote for the "Other" option in the poll.

Unfortunately there are no photos of the exhibit in the gallery. If someone could describe the enclosure or provide a photo that would be great.

I am not sure if there are photos of this enclosure in the gallery or not or if they're mixed with the Blacks.

Chester easily wins this for me. Although its the smallest of the four enclosures in 'Monkey Islands,' by quite some distance. The outdoor is beautifully landscaped, the amount of climbing on offer is second to none, and the indoor area alone is probably bigger and (with its mesh-covered roof allowing for additional height) more enriching than the entirety of the enclosures at Exmoor or London.

I’ve seen a few of these and they have been generally good spaces with lots of activity areas.

Banham’s isn’t the largest but it has a good amount of frames and climbing and different materials for the monkeys to climb on. Twycross looks a bit odd from the outside (probably the wire roof) and is a bit lower but spacious and good amount of things to do. Colchester has a lot of glass viewing (good for visitors less fun for photos) and different angles to see the monkeys from. Amazona is my least favourite of the ones I’ve seen but it’s not a bad space just a bit less interesting. I do like Dudley as the uninterrupted view of the monkeys is great and you get good clear views in a well furnished space with natural terrain. It lacks complex vertical space though.

Chester takes my vote this time - the inside area is large and well furnished with good viewing for visitors and the outside are is spacious, has good frames with a variety of materials and is put together very nicely.

Twycross' Black-headed enclosure originally held the Amur Leopards, which is why it feels slightly odd and low for such arboreal monkeys, but they seem to do well in there.

Edit to add a photo from 2006 when it housed the Amur Leopards: https://www.zoochat.com/community/media/amur-leopard-enclosure-twycross-2006.1999/

And another from 2008: https://www.zoochat.com/community/media/amur-leopard-at-twycross-nov-08.21890/
When I was a kid it was the tiger enclosure before they put a top on it!

Poll closed. Congratulations to Chester for having the Best UK Spider Monkey enclosure. The large indoors and outdoors with lots of furnishings gave them a landslide of a win, the second for the monkey house at the zoo. This win continues to stray Chester away from all the other competitors, as they have by far the most wins. @J C I am assuming you voted for Twycross (Black)?

Chester: 75.8%
Dudley: 9.1%
Curraghs: 3.0%
Paignton: 3.0%
Twycross (Brown): 3.0%
Chessington: 3.0%
Twycross (Black): 3.0%
