This is just a bit of fun to judge the general consensus on the best enclosure for Wolves in the UK. I have added a few photos from the gallery to make it easier for members to compare the different exhibits. If anyone wants to make an argument for a particular enclosure, please feel free to do so. Also, I would encourage people to perhaps list the enclosures in order of what they determine to be the best.

Unfortunately I couldn't find photos of all exhibits, so if anyone has been to Howletts, Port Lympne, Longleat, Knowsley or Dartmoor could they describe the exhibit, compare it to others and possibly provide photos.

If you want to vote for: Howletts, Paradise WP, Colchester, Combe Martin, Port Lympne, Longleat, Camperdown, Wingham, Knowsley, Dartmoor, South Lakes or Woodside then vote for the other option in the poll and post in the thread to highlight which collection you have voted for.

Howletts (Eurasian)

Unfortunately, there are no photos of this enclosure in the gallery. It would be extremely useful if someone who has visited can describe the exhibit and give an evaluation on its quality.

ok they had timber wolfs for many years!

Someone may correct me, but I’d use the word “timber” loosely - the pack were being passed off as “Grey” wolves for many years before the remaining members were euthanised. Not sure how inbred they were either (if they were at all!)

I believe I still have a book saying they were brought from Canada from the start and I did see a sign years ago saying Timber wolfs!

Woodside and Combe Martin have Hudson Bay, not Arctic. You've used one of the Wolverine exhibit pictures from Wildplace, not the wolf exhibit :)

Thanks :). In the gallery it is labelled as the Wolf enclosure. I have found another photo of what I hope is the Wolf enclosure.

Indeed. According to the old Zoo Life magazine (spring 1954) timber wolves were imported from Canada in 1953 and these were housed in what was then the new Wolf Wood ( keeping them separate from Whipsnade's original hybrid wolves).

The Whipsnade wolves were labelled as timber wolf for many years although the labels were subsequently changed to read grey wolf.

They don't even have that :p their animals are full-blown Heinz 57.

I believe Combe Martin had 2 types of wolf when I was there last summer. They were definitely advertising 1 group as 'Hudson Bay', not sure on the other.

This is their old enclosure. They share the same space as the brown bears; currently they are rotated but the plan is to mix them. When I was last there (5/3) the wolves were housed in the larger paddock.

When off rotation, in their separate exhibits, both species have nice exhibits like this but on a smaller scale.

Oh I was waiting for you to comment ;) Whilst I don't doubt their "muddy" genetics, that is what they're listed as on a certain database :p
