The valley area is the 20 acre area by Cafe Graze which when first opened had around 20 waterbuck, giraffe zebra and ostrich, now you can count the animals on one hand.
I love that exhibit but thought it is now unused.I heard that it was going to become Przewalski’s Horse exhibit or part of the Wetlands Project. If it is home to giraffes Marwell certainly deserves to win the vote.

Such a shame, glad I saw the back end of more prosperous days.

I agree, this is really sad. I thought the worst of Marwell’s species austerity was over?

Looking back now, Congo Buffalo are a species that I think I’ve taken for granted because I saw them so often at Marwell but in the grand scheme of things aren’t as common in captivity as I thought; I doubt I will see any for a very long time.

I also remember when they were at Whipsnade and it’s a damn shame when they left too. They made a better show in their paddock than the current occupants (Bongo?) do.

Poll closed. Congratulations to Marwell on winning the vote for Best UK Zoo Giraffe enclosure. In the end the win was fairly comfortable and marks Marwell's second win following on from that in the White Rhino category. Several other collections trailed Marwell with a handful of votes each but none of them managed to exceed the 15% barrier. It will be interesting to see how Edinburgh's new exhibit turns out and whether it could become a challenger in this category in the future.

@wayne goodman @Nod @Cavia porcellus who did you want to vote for?

Marwell: 39.0%
Whipsnade: 12.2%
Twycross: 12.2%
Chester: 9.8%
YWP: 7.3%
Africa Alive: 4.9%
Cotswold: 2.4%
Wild Place: 2.4%
South Lakes: 2.4%
My vote would have been for South Lakes. Marwell is my local zoo so I was confident it would be up there (winning!), however I want to visit SL at some point. Therefore, my 'other' vote went towards them.
-apologies for the delayed reply!

I remember Whipsnade's Congo buffalo housed in the original Indian rhinoceros accommodation in an enclosure, that no longer exists, near the Giraffe House

If it no longer exists then what did it become? Also, the Bongo enclosure which is stated above to of replaced the Congo Buffalo enclosure is also near the giraffe house.

The enclosure I referred to, which was Whipsnade's original Indian rhino enclosure in the 1930s, wasn't replaced by anything; it is no longer an animal exhibit. And it was much closer to the Giraffe House than the current bongo exhibit is.

Is this one that was near the corner/slightly along the driveway towards the far corner of the rhino paddock? Think there used to be vultures near there too?

The enclosure I was thinking of was the one that ran from the giraffe paddock, down past the black rhinoceros paddock (now gaur paddock) towards the sea lion pond (subsequently otter pond); this was where I last recall see Congo buffalo at Whipsnade.

There were vultures near the Giraffe House too but they were the other side of the building.

Tim is correct. The area in question was heavily replanted a few years back but the foundations are still there...if you know where to look for them. ;)

I used to love this enclosure when I was small- I can still remember the metal railings, the mud and the pond at one end. Also the two garage-style huts and small yards at the end facing the old sealion pond.
