Betty & Friends

I haven't read her book, but I did see an interview with her in the newspaper promoting her book the other day. She has been involved with the LA Zoo for several decades and probably has some really good stories to tell. I had the good fortune of seeing her at the LA Zoo at a Cynthia Moss lecture once. She asked some good elephant questions. She is a very classy person.

Just to let you know, there isn't a tonne of text in the book. Lots of pictures but the text is often just a paragraph to a page or so. It looks nice to read at the end of the day or to dip into but the stories don't go in-depth at all.

I just found the book at my local library and read through it in the library in about 30 minutes. It is essentially Betty White's love letter to the LA Zoo and the animals that she has known there. Most of the book is photos of the animals interspersed with themed essays or extended photo captions. She talks about the history of zoos, why good zoos are important for education or conservation, and the dedication of people who work at zoos.

The photos are grouped by theme (babies, families, etc.). She has a nice essay on Sumatran rhinos. She has a nice chapter on how she came to appreciate reptiles and got her friends to like them too. It has a very amusing anecdote about how scared her dad was of snakes.

If you like Betty White and/or the LA Zoo I would highly recommend it, but if you are looking for a substantial zoo book this is mostly a very light, but pleasant book of zoo animal photos.
