Bhutan's national animal

The national animal is the takin. There are 4 distinct subspecies, with the Bhutan and Golden ones being the rarest. The Sichuan is much more common in both the wild and captivity and found in China.

Thought you might like that story Budorcas, they look to be the mishmi takin in the park, a species becoming more and more common in Europe these days.

I would say they are Bhutan Takin rather than mishmi as i read an article a while back about a reserve which sounds similar to the one shown which kept them. I'm not sure though as i believe the boundaries of the two ranges are rather uncertain.

The takin looks like an awesome animal unfortunate that there are less than 1000, some nations with their national animals surprise me, ahaha they could be an extremly rare but distinct animal or they could just be everywhere so that they can't get them out of their minds.

Hi redpanda,

Taxonomically speaking most of the times only 3 subspecies are mentioned. Currently recognised ssp. are Mishmi takin Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor (Bhutan, Sikkim and Burma) - ENDANGERED, golden B. t. bedfordi (Shaanxi province, China) - ENDANGERED, Sichuan takin (Sichuan province, China) - VULNERABLE. Some authorities also however mention the Bhutan takin B. t. whitei - VULNERABLE.

On what grounds they are distiguishable from nominate Mishmis I have yet to find out. Will get back on that one!
