Big Cats

I know it's not about Zoo's but is anyone watching Big Cats on the BBC?

I've found it fascinating, and given some of the wide areas the smaller cats live in, in the wild, I'm amazed that collections that house some of them have such small enclosures, preventing the chance to see what they are really like.

I haven't watched it yet but I think I will watch the first two episodes right now considering episode 3 airs tommorow.

I agree it's a good series, but can't agree with your comments about small enclosures! Small cats are hard enough to see as it is, put a Pallas's cat in the average Snow Leopard enclosure or a Black footed Cat in a lion one and no-one will ever see them!

I commented on the massive new Scottish Wildcat exhibit at Port Lympne last year, it's bigger than some Lion /tiger enclosures - great for the cats, but pointless as a zoo exhibit!

Poor Black Footed Cat, you want to feed it to a lion :(

No comment!! No need for sarcasm just because someone doesn't agree with you!

I was just being humorous, sorry if you took offence!

I appreciate where you are coming from, but for me personally it's all about the animals, and we are merely just customers who come to view them. I'm all for replicating the animal's natural environment and giving them as best a life as possible. If that means on some occasions the public do not see them actively then so be it.

Animals fascinate me, and I love Zoo's and I love being able to pay to get hands on at Zoo's. I've always dreamed since a kid of owning a Zoo, but I don't want to do things small. Myself I want to build the biggest Zoo in the UK, with the most exotic and secretive and amazing animals and have them in exhibits which replicate natural wildlife and try and inform customers and also help with worldwide conservation. But it is only a dream, and I am nowhere near knowledgeable enough, well not yet. But I'm young and I hope within 20 years my dreams may become a reality.

I could spend hours just watching animals, watching how they behave and do things and get through life. I love programs like Big Cats because it absolute fascinates me, and I spend 5 days a week at all different zoo's mainly paying for VIP experiences just to view them up close, and learn more and more.

For me a Zoo should be about the animals not the people, we are merely there to appreciate and admire their beauty and to get an understanding of wildlife.

But then I am happy to say I'm very different to most people.

The majority of zoo exhibits are far smaller than the natural range any animal would exploit in the wild, if not all of them? As for natural behaviour, don't a lot of these cats only come out at night anyway, so really, we wouldn't be able to watch them behave naturally.
