Biotropica Biotropica news

3 Cheetahs-males have arrived for the new African section ( partly still under construction ), 1 from Chester and 2 from Zoo La Palmyre.

New species at Biotropica : from Zoo Frankfurt and Papiliorama Kerzers 2 Prehensile-tailed porcupines arrived :).

Just uploaded pictures of this zoo from June: Biotropica | ZooChat

It's an interesting little place - probably the closest I can come up with is a slightly more slick Amazon World (Isle of Wight) - it clearly started out as a tropical greenhouse on its own but now augmented by a little outdoor zoo. There's very little in the way of problems and it's hard to argue with a place breeding Slender-snouted Crocs and Coendou, and displaying Livingstone's Fruit Bat, Cape Ground Squirrel, tamadua, Arapaima and five species of macropod, including the rather-rare-these-days Agile Wallaby.

The cheetahs mentioned above are now there, though we failed to see them - the Komodo Dragon enclosure was still under construction as of June.

One more zoo to go to complete my French trip photos - we doubled up this modern odd small zoo with a rather more historic one a little further north before our ferry home.

Biotropica received a few weeks ago adult gharials for the first time. They took place in the former alligators enclosure. Unfortunately we don't know how many and where they come from.
The park still hold young gharials (received a few years ago) in another enclosure.

The park has demolished the nutrias enclosure and the black-necked swans pond to build a new exhibit for the giant anteater they received this year.

From a friend who visited the park today :
- arrival of a pair of Madagascar crested ibis, new species for the park.
- there are now 3 adult and 2 young false gharials.
- the grey-cheeked hornbill pair has chicks last summer.

The park will not held only giant anteaters in this area. They are building a aviary for blue-throated macaws (new species for them) and other new animals will be announced in the next weeks.
