Toledo Zoo Birdsandbats' Toledo Zoo Review (including new Promedica Mueseum of Natural History)

aybe the whole space can be devoted to the Big Five and the Little Five, with elephants taking up the brunt of the space, (and a more nonobtrusive cable fence as evident in the Maryland or Oregon zoos' elephant facilities), Aashish the rhino being sent to another zoo and being replaced with black rhinos, cape buffalo replacing the camels/reindeer/yaks and lions being brought back to the original enclosure.
As for the leopards?

I've thought that maybe TT could be themed around the Atlas Mountains and extinct fauna due to bears and elephants.

Of course! How could I forget about the leopards? I'd then suggest that the current otter exhibit would be netted over to house leopards, and the underwater viewing would be maintained (housing catfish which the leopards could hunt. I saw a snippet of a documentary where leopards learned to fish, it's quite fascinating). The otters would then move to the new River exhibit along with swamp monkeys.

Nice ideas. It will be interesting to see what the zoo decides to do if/when the river exhibit gets built and they have the flexibility to get creative with the Tembo Trail exhibits.

  1. when did they change their otter species?
  2. everyone here seems to like the idea of repurposing the otter exhibit for leopards and while I agree that the latter would make good thematic sense, wouldn’t the habitat be a bit small for a big cat?

What the *hypothetically* old otter exhibit lacks in horizontal space can be made up for in vertical space, via an old growth tree transplanted and established as well as an intricate, naturalistic climbing structure consisting of kopje rocks/logs.

I see.

Kinda like the Maryland Zoo's leopard exhibit, built around an existing old growth tree (the majority of the trunk of the tree is still there, for the most part it's been cut down, the reason I can't remember off the top of my head.)
So do you know what happened to the spotted-necked otters and when they were replaced with the North American ones?

Has construction begun yet? When their current master plan was unveiled about four years ago, IIRC the river exhibit was slated to open in 2019, but obviously that hasn’t happened. Is the exhibit still in the works?
I don't know anything about construction, but all of the recent projects have been completed according to the master plan so it seems as though the zoo has been sticking to it.

I actually went to the musuem june 1st but was lame and did not review it like you did. Theres a touch room with pelts, bones, and stuffed animals. We went and they had someone up there playing learning games and stuff with kids. I wasn't sure if i should renew the toledo pass this year (been going for years) and the musuem sold me on it. It was really well done and i could see going back to it many more times. I personally dont like their africa area, you are too far and their giraffe feed deck is so tiny it's terrible. Fort wayne zoo has the best giraffe deck i've seen so far, it's large, shaded, and has benches. The cheetahs used to be housed where the reindeer are/were? When we went in winter (across from carnivora cafe before the amphitheater) i wish they would of never changed that, they're too hard to see most of the time. The pengiuns used to be in the empty pool across from the tiger, also not a fan of that exhibit, personally think it's too small, gets super crowded too. The maned wolves rotate with the dingoes on display, the dingoes used to be in the current cougar enclosure, but the cougars were orphaned and the zoo took them in.
Question: Went to the zoo today July 2020, no cougars to be seen. Do they still have them? Employee I spoke with wasn't sure.

I didn't see them on-exhibit during my recent visit, either. If an employee wasn't sure, I would assume that they wouldn't be there anymore, but we can only find find out whenever the zoo announces something via media.

Also, I'm going to add the fact that the Promedica Museum of Natural History has to be one of, if not, the best exhibits I've ever seen so far. There's a lot of unique combinations that most zoos don't seem to even bother doing anymore...

I couldn't agree more. It is possibly my favorite zoo complex I have ever seen, the only thing that comes close are Wild Reef and Amazon Rising, both at Shedd.
