Birmingham Nature Centre Birmingham Nature Centre News 2011

I went last Sunday and spent an enjoyable half day there. The new tamarin enclosure is excellent.

Bongorob I wonder could you tell me were these are in the collection (from facebook)

NEW Demoiselle Crane now on display at the Centre. They were born at Twycross Zoo earlier this year.

Are the Tamarins (pygmy) you are on about the ones in the enclosure just off the main path in the little wooded area

Will try and visit this month and did you notice if the second red panda has arrived yet

The tamarins I mean were in the house opposite the education room. If it is not a new building, it was new to me. Think it housed emperor tamarins. I saw the cranes, they are nice.

The Emperor Tamarins have been moved in to a new enclosure that has been built in the area that used to be for the Guinea Pigs. The Golden Lion Tamarins at the moment can only be viewed by tv next to the Red Panda enclosure. The Golden-headed Lion Tamarin currently have the old Emperor Tamarin exhibit to themselves, the Pied Tamarins have the house that is hidden in the bushes near to the Porcupine exhibit,as for Pygmy Marmosets cannot recall seeing any on this visit or any other recent visit to BNC.

@Zoogiraffe I am sorry I did mean the Pied Tamarins I was having a blonde momment will be visiting early December so any questions will answer via p/m

EDIT - If anyone wants to meet up then let me know what would be the best date for you and will try and arrange a meet up

I travel past this place on a regular basis with work, and have noticed that the former BBC Pebble Mill site is still empty, I know it's a dream that will never happen, but wouldn't it be great if the City Council bought this land for the Nature Centre to enlarge the place.
As it is it's getting some interesting additions to it's collection and showing them in a good way despite a lack of space to expand. Another option would be to take some space on the other side of the site in Cannon Hill Park.
I wonder what the long term plans are for the park regardins lack of space and bringing in new displays.

I've always had visions of an expansion into Cannon Hill, I guess they've already done a minor expansion because if you look at the old Birmingham Zoo map in the gallery you can see it never crossed the brook and the paddocks at the start after the entrance never used to house animals. It does seem like a logical solution to help keep the centre heading in an upward direction.

Over the weekend I heard I rumour that the place was going to be getting a species of Small Cat,so I decided to check this out with people that actually know what is arriving at the Centre, when they finished laughing, they told me that they had no plans to bring in any Small Cat species,in fact they hadn't even discussed the idea during any of the collection plan meetings that the staff have!
So if any of you have heard this rumour forget it as its not happening and has no base's of truth in it.
