Does anyone think that we will ever have Black Wildebeest back in the Uk. i know that some years back a few zoo's did keep them but i never got to see them. lets keep our fingers crossed that they do come back

I hope so. We could do with featuring in a Disney film, then evetry zoo would want some.

it would be so nice to see them would love Marwell to get them again but dont thing they will

I think, it also depends on what the studbook keeper is doing and planning with that species. It is important to find new holders for Black wildebeest, because the founder population is very small, so its necessary to increase their numbers. But its very hard to find new holders, Black wildebeest more tough than the Blue Wildebeest, and this is one reason why they have almost dissapperead from european collections.

I reallo hope that we get these animals back into the uk im sure there is somewhere that could house them again like Whipsnade

I'm pretty sure Whipsnade must have had them back in the '50s or '60s, because Durrell mentions (in an early book whose name eludes me) how hopelessly mad they were when he was a junior keeper. I have heard this of blacks, and they certainly lived up to it when I saw them in South Africa.

I've found the black wildebeest in the older whispnade guidebooks, they are in the guides until the 1963 edition. In 1964 no guide was publsihed, and in the 1965 edition, the black wildebeest were replaced with white bearded wildebeest.

I know that London Zoo have kept them before there is a picture in the book London Zoo from old photographs 1852-1914 and Whipsnade have ad them and also marwell Zoo in which one of there guides it says thery are often extremely aggressive to each other and people also i think someone on here said that Blackppol have kept them any one else know of any others to have had them

Blackpool did keep them. I have a very bad slide from 1974 of two black wildebeeste showing their rumps and tails, they stubbornly refused to move and give me a better shot.
