Visayan warty pigs are due to arrive at the zoo on 4th May as per their facebook site.
 
the date for the warty pigs is the 5th of may but this isnt not 100% confirmed yet as arriving is 1.5 blackbuk
 
27/6/10 Visit

Visited today, as usual quite a lot of new things:

Amphibian Room (Secrets under the stairs) exhibits are now labled.
(PDF means Poison Dart Frog)
In there are:
  • Yellow Banded PDF
  • Golden Mantella
  • Dyeing PDF
  • Golden Sedge Frog
  • Asian Painted Bull Frog
  • Marbeled Newt
  • Chinese Gliding Tree Frog
  • Alpine Newt
  • Blue PDF
  • Splash Backed PDF
  • Tiger Legged Leaf Frog
  • Amazon Milk Frog
  • Fire Salamander
  • Greater Siren


Tropical House
  • In the Marmoset outdoor exhibit is now Lorikeets and Starlings. In there inside exhibits are now Red Legged Tortoises. Marmosets no where to be seen
  • New in the large aviary on the left are 4 Double Banded Coursers
  • Also, the group of Carmine Bee Eaters are in the walkthrough rather than the aviary

Behind the Cafe, between the outdoor seating area and the "Pink" aviary, is a very basic aviary for a Pair of Snowy Owl. The aviary has limited perches although there are a few large rocks in there.
 
I've already made 3 attempts to get there this year, and then changed my mind at the last minute. I really, really, must try harder.
 
Where abouts in the zoo is the Amphibian room?
And where are the Warty Pigs?
The snowy owl aviary on the gallery looks bare but I presume it'll look better after a bit as it's new.
 
The amphib room is under the education room just behind the chipmunk enclosure under the stairs.
The warty pigs are housed in the houses that used to keep the otters in next to the meerkats with an extended outdoor enclosure behind the meerkats

It appears its changed quite a bit since I visited last year-must go again soon-probably November time
 
Had another enjoyable visit yesterday, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Saw the smallest meerkat I've ever seen, out and about although it only looked about 2 weeks old.

I was pleasantly surprised by a new pair of Darwin's rheas. I like what has been done with the old Wings/web Tropical house, it's not ambitious but is nicely executed, although none of the reptiles was labelled. Talking of signs, some birds had been moved around but the signs had not, and there are often multiple species in aviaries with only information about some of them. But that is a minor gripe.

Some building work was going on in the corner by the openbills, which I was not able to see.

I spotted a reindeer in the distance, I don't know if that is a new addition as it wasn't properly on show. I thought I heard something about a new mammal species not currently seen in the UK when a group of staff walked past, anyone know if this is going to happen?

I have heard a rumour to that effect. If it comes off it will be very exciting! (for us zoo nerds, anyway!)
 
the new enclosure by the open bills is for dwarf mongoose, the rumour of a new mammal species not seen in the uk is true the details have just got be finalised. also did you see the baby darwin rhea? it was in with the baby florida sanhill crane just down from the secrtary birds
 
The new mammal species sounds intriguing .

I assume Darwin's rhea have been successfully bred in the UK before though probably not for a long time .

Any news on other successful breedings for 2010 ?
 
I went on 10th July and saw the Darwin's Rhea chick. The first UK breeding was Woburn in 1906. There was also a white rhea chick in the nursery aviary, and a lot of duckings and goslings.
 
I some how don't see it causing as much hype as the Chester thread. Three secretary birds have also been reared this year

Yes I saw the baby rhea it is very inquisitive, I hadn't seen its parents at that point so I assumed it was a common rhea, so that is great news. Also very good news about the secretary birds - I only saw two in their pen, are the young still in with them?

Another question: what are the black crows in the aviary opposite the maguaris (they are in with larger birds but it has slipped my mind what)?

I managed to get a great irritating and very loud new ringtone courtesy of your kookaburras.

the 3 young are being hand reared but the adults are sat on another 2 eggs. erm i ashume the black crows in the aviary are just common crows that got onto the enclosure as there should just be a young pair of florida sandhill cranes in that aviary.

it was probly me you over heard talking about the new species, i was telling a old keeper about it and for a hint its a european mammal and only one other other collection keeps them according to isis
 
Thanks, I thought they might just be crows but the mesh seemed too fine for them. I was hoping you were going to say New Caledonian crows so I could ask you when the kagus were arriving:)

I know what the new mammal is, I heard you say it, although there are several zoos in Europe with it unless you're getting a particular subspp.
