Mollie the European brown bear has died, she was 32 years old and put to sleep.
(would Mollie be the brown bear from Edinburgh zoo?)
The Amur tiger enclosure has been extended and a viewing platform added
1.0 Bactrian camel born

what is a wobble tree? I can see anything on the site. Does anyone know whether African elephant from the Welsh Mountain Zoo is still alive and at Blair Drummond? The elephant database lists 4 cows there but I am aware there are only 3.

Wonderful news, esp. since it is another female!

On cows and calves, I thought Blair Drummond had 2 young cows imported from South Africa. How come that beside Dorothy the other has not yet calved at all?

They do have a 2nd cow called Jane. However I don't know why she has never bred.

Any news on future projects at Safari Park Blair Drummond?
Will it go the way of the Highland WP ...., but then in terms of African/Asian plains animals ...?

Is the old bull white rhino Dick still alive and well?

Cyprus webcam viewer spots Scottish rhino birth

BBC News - Cyprus webcam viewer spots Scottish rhino birth

BBC News said:
Keepers at a Scottish safari park were alerted to a rhino birth by a webcam viewer from Cyprus who called to say the animal's waters had broken.

The southern white rhino, named Dot, gave birth to a female calf on 21 December at Blair Drummond Safari Park, near Stirling.

The birth of the rhino was reported on here at the time - but the story of the birth being spotted from Cyprus made me smile! According to the link, the baby ('Ailsa') is now on show.

Any idea whether the second imported white rhino cow is breeding at all?
If not ..... I am just a tad surprised she has not been on the transfer list to improve her breeding record (obviously it is not working with the current bull).

Any takers?

Longleat had 1:2 from the same shipment in September 2003. Yet they have not had a single calf from the group. If they could do a bull swap with Blair Drummond then everyone could benefit.

Adding an extra bull at each place could be the way to go and stir things up somewhat within each herd

It's concerning that after 6 years? that Longleat's male hasn't produced a calf. It would be unwise to send him to Blair Drummond, their male obviously knows what he is doing

Longleat orignally had 2:3. They took in 2:2 from Windsor Safari when it closed. One of the cows was in the 90's shipped to Dublin where she has since died. Jin-Jin (m) died around 2002/2003? (before the current 1:2 arrived) Babs the last original female died in 2005 and last year they lost Winston the remaining bull. Leaving them with the 1:2 imports.

Ideally, they could do with another 1:1 to spice things up in the herd. They have the space to easily accomodate this.
