I'd be very interested to hear from any of the Dutch-speaking contributors to Zoo Chat hwta they think of Blijdorp's magazine, Blijdorp Blad. To me it looks excellent - thorough, intelligent, well put-together. But then, i don't speak Dutch - the content might be awful!

And what does 'blad' mean?

Many thanks!

blad means magazine :)
I've been reading it for years now and I like it very much, one of the better zoo magazines in my opinion.

There are a lot of background stories in it with information that's not available in the zoo itself (projects in situ, new developments).

Zoos have to take care that the education is "bite-size" and a lot of it is focused on children.

I like it a lot.

I've read only a few but the magazine can compete with Artis Magazine. both are the best of The Netherlands i.m.h.o.

Where can you see them online?

You can't - unless someone would scan it and put it on internet illegally. The paper is strictly meant for people with annual subscriptions to the zoo.

Actually that is a pity since some articles would be interesting and inspiring for greater audiences, like the regular updates on the improvements in Parimaribo zoo (Surinam - former Dutch colony) that are financially and technically (like actually detail designing new exhibitions or getting there to help) supported by at least four Dutch zoos: Artis, Rotterdam, Amersfoort and Apenheul.

Well, Artis has something online, but their webpage is built in a way that a link is not really working.

You have to remember that the PR might not be focused on the international zoo-community. In the case of the Parimaribo zoo all zoos focus on the Surinam people living in the Netherlands (twice as much as actually living in Surinam!). You would miss out on this, but then again, no zoo can focus their communication on just one person (or a very few).
