Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp News 2012

I can find loads of news sites reporting it, but none saying its a hoax. Where did it start?

It started with a major drugbust for which the banana load was a maquerading agent. Imagine that 20,000 kgs of bananas do not last very long and D.B. itself has publicly denied the very fact that the bananas would come Blijdorp's way (apart from the very fact that in feed stuffs bananas is not recommended for many species and so very few mouths for so many bananas ... so no way).

It is rather disheartening that the press - in these circumstances - never check their facts right and just print it cause it sells well. And vice versa it lands in the international press - always a good one for hype stories and you are done with it.

Again, let me say the story is a complete hoax.

Blijdorp stated on their Facebook that it is a hoax:

"The message in the media that Blijdorp would get 20,000 kilos of bananas is, of course, nonsense. Our animals get a balanced menu."

and:

"Here the denouement of the 'banana-mystery': 20,000 kilos of bananas is 'somewhat' too much for our animals. They get a balanced and varied menu. But Blijdorp did get some boxes of bananas of need. Especially the elephants, monkeys and bats are happy with it, and so is the staff. Obviously the bananas are completely 'Coke-free'."

and:

"Blijdorp (employees) are delighted with this unexpected goods for the animals. Recently Blijdorp was offered free shopping at Albert Heijn (supermarket). This then resulted in two carts full of food for our animals."

Other births the past days are a gorilla (from Tamani) and from a white crowned mangabey.

?

It would be great if anybody can help in the following questions:

I need some information on the Krokodillenrivier exhibits. I visited the building in 2009, but there has been some changes since them. So: in the main mixed-exhibit there are Rock Hyrax, Klipspringer, African Spurred Tortoise (and African Catfish). Is that correct? And where are the Meerkats? Together with the Porcupines?

Thanks in advance...

Regards,

Orycteropus

The large exhibit indeed has rock hyrax, klipspringer. A. S. tortoise, african catfish and some cichlids. The meerkats are together with the porcupines, but they want to build a new exhibit for them when enough gifts have been given...
