Book recommendations

Recently, I've been enjoying reading popular science type books that go into depth on different species without reading too much like a textbook, and which often cover the human context around the species as well. Some I've read and enjoyed so far include Emperors of the Deep, Illumination in the Flatwoods, How to Speak Whale, The Soul of an Octopus, and What an Owl Knows.

Only problem is I'm starting to run out of them, so does anyone have any recommendations for similar books on different species (especially on ungulates)?

Unfortunately I don’t have one for ungulates, but the best popsci book on a specific species I’ve ever read is Eager by Ben Goldfarb. It dives into the history of human interaction with beavers, from pre-colonization to modern times, and is really informative about beaver ecology. It has some great profiles of individual “Beaver Believers”, or people who advocate for the protection and reintroduction of beavers, and is written in a really entertaining, enthusiastic, and often funny way. It changed my way of thinking about beavers and how crucial they are to their ecosystems.

Sounds exactly like what I’m looking for, thank you!

If you like the style of illustrations Ugo Mochi provided for "Hoofed Mammals of the World" then note he also contributed the illustrations for the book "A Natural History of Zebras" (1976) (with text by Dorcas MacClintock) a book that would probably appeal to somebody with the user name "equidae".

He also illustrated "A Natural History of Giraffes" by the same author. Some of those illustrations were used as education graphics in the Bronx Zoo giraffe house also.

The book most definitely appeals - indeed, it's not the most subtle of usernames - thank you all.

The book most definitely appeals.....
Other books you should look out for include:

"Horses, Asses and Zebras in the Wild" (Colin Groves; 1974)
"Zebra Stripes" (Tim Caro; 2016)
"Wild Equids: Ecology, Management & Conservation" (Ransom & Kaczensky; 2016)

I have 1 and 3 of that list already, will have a look for a copy of Zebra Stripes, thank you.

@equidae You probably own a copy already but, if you don't, I think you'd like "Quaggas and Other Zebras" (David Barnaby; 1996)
So this is a good one is it? I can't find any copies that are cheap though.....
Yes I think this is an interesting and enjoyable read but, unfortunately, it tends to be pricey. There are a number of copies available on-line at £60+ which is expensive for a slim paperback book.
