I just bought a fun picture book as a Christmas present for my 2 year old niece called " 'Slowly, slowly, slowly' said the Sloth" by Eric Carle. Eric Carle is famous for his classic picture book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".

This is a nice, mellow story about a three-toed sloth minding its own business in a tree while several other species ask it why it is slow, quiet, boring, and lazy. Mostly the sloth doesn't respond, but then it defends itself against being lazy.

The story is nice, but the real joy of the book are Carle's illustrations of the creatures of the South American rain forests. They are in vivid, eye-popping colors and dynamic shapes. Many species from leaf-cutter ants to giant anteaters to toucans make appearances. All of the rain forest species are featured in a wide-screen spread at the end of the book.

The book has a nice introduction from Jane Goodall that is a really good primer on sloth biology.

This book is highly recommended if you have a little sloth fan (or are one yourself and wish to return to your youth momentarily) or have little ones that you want to introduce to the critters of the South American rain forest.
