I assume there must be a few books on Australian Zoos, written by owners, keepers and vets.
Can anyone list them here please.

Here is the ones I have:

Taronga Zoo:

-Postcards from the Zoo (2002). Darill Clements, Harper Collins. Biography of public relations (I think) manager at Taronga, with lots of stories about events and animals that occurred during her tenure.

Melbourne Zoo:

-The Zoo Story (1995). Cateherine de Courcy, Claremont. History of Melbourne Zoo, although also gives a lot of attention to worldwide and Australian zoo history

-150 Years: Melbourne Zoo (2012). Apparently very good histor of the zoo - thread here: http://www.zoochat.com/24/history-book-150th-anniversary-271793/

Australia Zoo:

The Crocodile Hunter (1997). Steve & Terri Irwin, Viking. Not solely about the zoo, but does include a bit about it if I remember correctly.

zoos of australia, produced in the 90s by Australia Post, the keepers and the kept, released last year by a taronga keeper named terry boylan, after the ark (particularly good), zoo walkabout (1970-1980s), life is a zoo (2000s). most of these can be brought second hand.
then theres all of the zoo magazines and guidebooks.

On my shelf at the moment:

Almost Human by A A W Wilkie, subtitled "Reminiscences from the Melbourne Zoo". Oddly no date of publication, however from notations it must have been prior to 1932. I just opened it to find three feature-size newspaper articles from around 1980 and a brochure which must have been prior 1960.

Zoo Walkabout by Vincent Serventy, pub 1979 covering mostly major collections.

Royal Zoological Society of South Australia 1878-1978 by C E Rix pub 1978 a history.

The Zoo by Peter Crowcroft pub 1978. Crowcroft was director at both Taronga and Brookfield in the USA, so this book covers more than just Australia. However it was published in Australia so it is very heavy in Aussie, and especially Taronga, content.

Zoos of Australia by Catherine de Courtney pub 1994. Not very thick, published by Australia Post to coincide with a series of stamps featuring Aussie zoos.

BEAUTY AND THE BEASTS by Ronald Strahan, a former director of Taronga Zoo was published by the Zoological Parks Board of N.S.W. in 1991 and is a good history of Taronga and Western Plains Zoos.

(Of course, the book on Aussie zoos and circus that I'm REALLY hanging out to read hasn't been written yet - it's the one in Steve Robinson's head. Trouble is, he's too busy to write it!)
