OK you Orangophiles - after learning loads in the Sumatran thread could you now do the same for me in this thread.

Who are the Bornean Orangs at CZ - relationships, birth dates etc

off you go - educate me please :D

Martha... The oldest orang, mother to Sarikei and Leia

Tuan(m)

Saikei ... Mother to Iznee(m)

Leia Mother to Latifah (F)

Tuan is father to both youngsters ..

Martha came to Chester in 1966, don't know her date of birth..

The two little ones were born in 2009....

Tuan (m) born 18/07/78 at Cologne
Sarikei (f) born 22/11/83 at Chester
Martha (f) born in 1965 in the wild
Leia (f) born 06/02/96 at Chester

As mentioned Martha is the mother of Leia and Sarikei.

I am unsure of Iznee and Latifah's birthdate.

ah so Martha was wild caught hey - interesting

So if Tuan is father to both Iznee & Latifah - who were Sarikei & Leia's father?

it's weird to think that an animal that's justa wee bit older than me was wild caught and put in a zoo - I was in Malaysia as a child too so it's a bit sad really

'Martha' arrived at Chester with a young same-aged male 'Kimbu'. They lived first in the Monkey House (which in those days had small indoor cages) before transferring to the (then new) Orangutan House. Kimbu later died in a drowning accident.

According to the SB, Sarikei's father was Dennis (one of Chester's own previous males) Leia's father was Anak (a London Zoo male who was also later transferred to Chester where he died.) So they are halfsisters.

mmm so the question would be - is there any issue genetically breeding half sisters with the same male?

the offspring from both would be cousins as well as genetically half siblings?

I guess so... they just wouldn't be allowed to be kept together/breed as adults. The Studbooks have 'mean kinship' listings and fully document all animals' parentage so there's little/no danger of that ever happening.

yes i've just been exploring that - highly addictive the studbooks - I have the Cheetah ones downloaded for a perusal when I get a spare hour - OMG I will have no life!

Martha is now the oldest orangutan in the UK I think. Great to see her in the hammock with the grand-kids! Mostly Iznee.

Studbooks aren't merely an interest, they're more a way of life...;)

Maybe you can access a Scottish Wildcat one and check on those 'pretenders' at Twycross. Last I heard they were brushing up their tails to make them look blunter.:D

Yes, but remember that Emma and Subis are full sisters, so the relationship between their offspring is even closer.

Loving these 2 orange threads, I've copied some bits into my phone for notes when I go again :)

it's a service I provide - spent a happy hour this afternoon reading the studbook and making family notes - I have thoroughly embraced my inner geek
