Argh, makes you sick, poor birds :(
 
The work of a professional gang who are acutely aware of these birds value! The wildlife trade is no. 1 compared to the drugs trade, yet ... why are we investing so much more resources into anti-drug operations and are our wildlife trade capabilities so little and few (and the sentences ridiculously cheapish - a EURO 10,000 fine for a pair of palm cockatoos worth ... exactly EURO 150,000)!

I would hope Bristol Zoo and DEFRA staff can trace these criminals and bring back the red-vented cockatoo to their rightful owners. (There is not that many people able to - both in terms of housing and fundamentally financial clout - to house these birds privately.
 
That's good, didn't go on for too long, fortunately.
 
I understand the reluctance to divulge the identity of the house or other .. in order to for police officers to properly persecute the perpetrators.

I just hope that criminal justice realises that this is a serious wildlife trade crime and needs to be dealt with far more firmly than has previously been the case. Only considerable prison terms and substantial fines (in the order of say EURO 200,000) for the perpetrators will help deter this kind of trapping and the illegal wildlife traders effectively.
 
They're hardly likely to get a prison sentance or a substanstial fine in Britain. They're more likely to be told not to do it again. Our judges are way out of touch with public opinion, whatever the crime.

Just like our murderers get a slap on the wrist and community service if we're lucky :P
 
I do not agree with the previous 2 comments.
Let's see what happens. Remember that hanging people found guilty of stealing sheep didn't stop that crime from being committed.

Hi, We got the cockatoos back within 24 hours, they were found close by to where they were taken from in someone's front room. Luckily, none the worse for their ordeal and they're enjoying all the extra attention!!:)
 
Yes. the tortoise arrived this week and is being quarantined with the other animals at BZG. Haven't seen her yet myself though

Raymond Sawyer is the only person to have bred Giant Tortoise at his private collection in the U.K cannot remember the date but it going back a few years.Twycross have had eggs from theirs but they didn`t hatch.
 
So they have never bred in a public zoo?

Not in the UK no, i believe the first zoo to breed Aldabra giant totoises was Taronga in Sydney.

Now i don't know if this is true or not but i am fairly sure i have read somewhere that London zoo in its early years either bred or had eggs laid from a pair or group of undescribed giant tortoises, can anyone confirm this?
I'm sure i read it in IZN or maybe IZES, just don't know.:confused:
 
I think the only zoo in Europe to breed giant tortoises is Zurich, and unfortunalety their breeding pair belong to 2 different subspecies.
 
Hasn't Prague from their giant tortoises too?

The reptile house is now closed until November, due to the installation of a new heating and lighting system.
