British burbot reintroduction

The Norfolk Rivers Trust is currently in the process of planning and funding a five-year reintroduction project for the burbot in the East Anglian Fens. The species has not been recorded in Britain since 1969; even so, the project will be doing a DNA survey of rivers as part of the feasibility project to ensure that the species has not simply evaded detection. The pollution of rivers is seen as being the main cause of decline and with improvements in water quality, there are hopes a reintroduction will be successful.

Because of the high mortality rate for young burbot, hundreds of thousands of young burbot will be reared in captivity from eggs coming from European hatcheries.
