And a new contender enters the ring for the first time in this cup - the two RZSS collections (Edinburgh and Highland Wildlife Park) now have a chance to test their mettle against Colchester, a collection which has had a fairly strong start. A very broad topic is at play here - ASIA - with all that this entails or potentially entails.

As noted in the other match starting up now, there are plenty of avenues of discussion available and I hope to see plenty *of* discussion taking place :D

Let's see where things go from here, shall we?

Initial feeling is probably in favour of RZSS given HWP vast exhibits in this field and Edinburgh's large species list, but still think Colchester deserves a point due to nice enclosures for their own species. Might give a more comprehensive overview later when I have more time and hopefully trigger some conversation without being too controversial ;).

Asia is not Colchester's greatest strength geographically (Africa or South America it strolls it against RZSS and many other zoos in the Cup), but it has a reasonable Asian collection. This is possibly RZSS strongest geographical category though, of non duplicated species/sub species, Edinburgh has Indian rhino, malayan tapir, snow leopard, sumatran tiger, giant panda & a lot of Asian hoofstock whilst Colchester has Bornean orangutan, komodo dragon, smooth coated otter, lion tailed macaque. I think Colchester just about deserves a point, as there are a lot of duplicates.

One of the biggest advantages RZSS has in this regard beyond issues of species collections has got to be their work with Amur Leopard at HWP; their entire breeding complex for the species is entirely offshow with only one or two staff members allowed access in order to limit exposure to humans, so that all offspring born are suitable for reintroduction.

As such maybe our "conservation is all, collection is irrelevant" members might deem RZSS worthy of a clean sweep :p I don't, however.

Bit disappointed there wasn't more discussion on this one, but never mind :P onwards we go into the next round!
