British Wildlife Centre British wildlife centre day out

Couldn’t see a thread specifically for the centre but there were a few recommendations about it and as a keen photographer I went there on a photography day today. It was my first visit as it’s quite a trek. I don’t usually do photography days as I like a wander about but a bit of research suggested this was a good one so went for it as my first.

One of the best things about this forum is continually finding great new collections to go and look at!

The photography day was really lovely with in enclosure access to red squirrels (in their walkthrough) foxes and Scottish wildcats and feeding with stoats, weasels, Resident / native British deer, polecats, badgers, mink and hedgehogs as well as harvest mice and owls to see. Thoroughly exciting and enjoyable stuff. I liked the fact the animals could choose whether to engage or not (didn’t see the otters for their fish as they were offered it but chose to stay in bed!).

The exhibits are well done and varied - I liked the recreation of the river bank for the water voles for example and they have some good breeding / reintroduction activity going on with different species. The wetland area was interesting too.

Very much enjoyed the range of wildlife (there was time for wandering about without the group to check out the other residents (saw the adder, black and brown rats and pine martens). Lots of great educational material and the keeper showing us around was really knowledgable.

Completely worthy of its recommendations on here it was awesome to be able to get up close to some of our native wildlife. I was quite bowled over by the squirrels, foxes and wildcat in particular. I’ve had some great days out at collections this year but this was well up there and quite a one off.

It even made the M25 doing it’s car park in a rain storm imitation well worth it!

Do they still keep multiple species if indigenous bats? Or are these holdings mostly temporary rescues?

They had at least pipistrelles and serotines when I visited iirc but I don’t know if they were rescues or a breeding population - hopefully someone has more info.
