Broadway Zoological Park (North Carolina)

This is a new zoo that has been planned for at least over a year or so. Social media sites have stated that they are hoping to open in early 2024 but from the looks of it they have yet to do so. From social media photos they have a couple of rarities like Costa Rican Variegated Squirrel (only one in the USA?) and ibex (USDA lists them as Spanish Ibex but I highly doubt they are).
The zoos address is in Broadway, NC about on hour or less south of Durham and Raleigh so perhaps a place some zoochatters from the region might be interested in knowing about. I found it interesting that their logo looks extremely similar to Zoo Miami's.

Does anyone have any more info on this facility including any news about whether they will actually ever open?

Admittedly I don't know much about what goes into opening a new zoo, but I'm a bit surprised by just how many animals they have just by scrolling down their Facebook. Aside from the squirrel, they're all bread and butter non-AZA zoo fare, but between the quantity and the enclosures looking fairly nice for this sort of place, this all has to be a colossal money sink at this point.

Google Street View from just a few months ago does corroborate that something is going on there, you can see the buildings featured on social media, but they also clearly have quite a ways to go - there's no entrance or parking lot, at the very least. Still, my first thought was that this might somehow be a grift, so it's nice to see that this does seem to be legit.

Unfortunately it's a bit further from me than I would've hoped (4.5 hours, but could potentially be combined with GSC or DLC), but certainly not too far away for me to want to see that squirrel. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on them.

I always cross reference with Bing maps as they often are more updated. In this case you can see the gravel parking area on Bing:Bing Maps - Directions, trip planning, traffic cameras & more

*edit, you can see the gravel lot on my Google maps as well.

I recently noticed that this place is now open for tours in advance of their eventual full opening. There isn't much information on their site or socials, but I contacted them and got a few more details. Without being too explicit, they're already booked out for several months, but the cost is inexpensive (on par with most small zoos).

I was hoping I might be able to work them into my year-end running around I'm about to start doing next week, but oh well. I'll have something to look forward to next year, at least.

I found out about this place just after visiting nearby Raven Rock and I might check it out myself as well; it's just over an hour from me.
