I don't think it is leaving. The article gives the impression that the zoo has another one and has donated that.

That's not correct Rob, the original will be staying at the zoo, a second, new sculpture by the same artist is being created and donated to the city.

New Bronze Elephant Unveiled

The new bronze elephant was unveiled today. I have some photos of the official hand-over via a third-party, but here's one from the zoo themselves:

I saw the little guy (admittedly sex undetermined) yesterday evening and he's lovely. The sculpture is same size as the one in the zoo, but looks smaller in this setting. It faces out towards the Town Hall and is roughly opposite the information kiosk. There will eventually be a plaque too.
