The Southern brown howler ( Alouatta guariba clamitans ), which is found in South-eastern Brazil and Argentina was once also found on Santa Catarina Island but went extinct for about 300 years because of human activities ( agriculture, hunting, logging ).
In the meantime several protected areas have been establised and there would be enough place to bring the species back on the island.
This is now planned and at the Santa Catarina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center there are 25 Brown howlers ( rescued and confiscated animals from the illegal wildlife trade ) which are now prepared to be released into the wild :).
