ashley-H has just posted on my personal vision thread that there is a brown hyena @ Port lympne, does any one know anything else about it

No, ashley-h reported he saw a brown hyena arrive there this week.
 
He was in the enclosure by the lone lioness at the top of the hill.
Lovely looking animal, and very active. Not sure if this had something to do with him being new, however I don't know how new he was to be honest. I assume he'd only arrived that week or the same day because his travel crate was still there and the keepers were putting out some foot dips and that.
 
An exciting week for new species to add to the current UK list ,both white-tailed gnu at Newquay and brown hyena at Port Lympne totally unexpected - what next !!

I'm suprised the site is keeping 'schtum on it though. They seem ready to announce a free safari holiday, but when it comes to animals they didn't even mention Howletts closing due to the recent dhole escape.
 
Or Javan rhinos and Lonesome george, just as unrealistic. But remember these plans will have been thought out long in advance, it's just we don't have many forum members who are regulars to these collections who can find out what is going on.
 
I may not be a regular, but I am a supporter and relatively good in the know on PL and Bekesbourne. Some other forumster is actually a local from the region ***** So, not too bad I would have thought?

On the subject of douc langurs as a joke. PL held them before when it was just about to set up its leaf eating monkey breeding center. Sadly, the colony did not make it long term. I think and feel that given their availability, PL's expertise in leaf eating monkeys and all it would be not that unrealistic to see back douc langurs at PL.

I rest my case ... and go figure next (lol)! :D

what's the ***** word? Its appeared on another post I saw of your's too. I'm assuming its not an actual swear word, but I can't figure out what it is supposed to say!

No, no swear word (I would not use those anyway on the forum). It is just plain blank ..... (I just thought the ***** looked better)! :)

I was just saying it is not too bad ..... after all. I may not physically get over there too often, but I remain very well informed on ins, outs and new exhibits at PL/JAF. Besides, I frequently write in as I am a supporter (it used to be better when we got the ab fab annual report, but they do no longer send that one out sadly).

Besides, we do have a forum poster from the Kent area who is a regular. So, I just thought that it is not all that non-informal stuff, not in the know out there on PL/JAF.
 
Port Lympne did indeed receive one male and one female brown hyena from Prague in mid-february. They are in quarantine for the moment, seems the female is a little more relaxed than the male, who remains a bit shy. I think there may be a press release about it in the near future.
 
Cool :) I only saw one, I assume the female then if she's awake more often.
 
FANTASTIC NEWS!!!:) Might get chance to pop down there this year! Scratch that, if Hyenas are involved, I'm definately going:D. How long is it since this species was last at Port Lympne?
 
This news is great as i only just missed seeing the last lot of Brown Hyenas at PL,but this does completly mess up my plans for my hit and run on Howlets and the RSCC.Sod will just have to do the lot in 2 days.

According to this article: "There are less than 50 brown hyenas registered in captivity in Europe and about 100 worldwide. " ???

AFAIK there are only seven European zoo keep this species. Does anybody know how many individuals live in the two French zoo, at Les Abrets and Toulon?
