Budapest Zoo Masterplan

I started a large project recently. I'm planning now how would Budapest Zoo look like in 2030. This project consists of a map of the zoo with the enclosures that might build (at least in my mind:)), a description (the proper masterplan) and a species list. I'll upload the map either to ZooChat Gallery and here. The two text documents will be shared in this thread.
According to @Orycteropus's the zoo has an official masterplan, but I haven't found it yet. (Perhaps it's a non-public paper.)
Anyway, if I can't find the official one, I will make an unofficial masterplan of Budapest Zoo.
Feel free to share your ideas and to ask questions;)

Here is the map (in three parts because of Budapest Zoo's shape):My Budapest Zoo Masterplan Map 1. (America Tropicana, Great Lake, Australia, Little Rock) - ZooChat, My Budapest Zoo Masterplan Map 2. (Owl Castle, India House, Orangutans, West Africa House) - ZooChat and My Budapest Zoo Masterplan Map 3. (Great Rock and its surroundings, Asian carnivores, Venomous House, Savanna House, Ethiopian exhibit complex) - ZooChat.
The whole masterplan includes the place of the Circus, because now it seems like it will be moved, and the Zoo will get the land. But it excludes the Biodome and the Once-upon-a-time- Castle, in the species list, their animals will be a separate list, because these are /will be relatively new parts and I don't know enough about them (especially Biodome).

Here is the first part of the description:

MOTTO

One of the most frequent misconceptions which is constantly met in the zoo is the business of regarding the animals as prisoners. This is as false and old-fashioned as if in these days everybody still thought that radio and television sets contained little men who talked, sang and danced inside the sets.

INTRODUCTION

CURRENT ZONES OF THE ZOO

-SAVANNA ZONE

The parts of this zone are Savanna House and its outdoor exhibits, Buffalo House, Old Giraffe House, the Elephant House and the enclosure of Sacred baboons and Aoudads. This zone probably has the most problems, for instance the baboon enclosure (full of concrete, hot in summer, no living plants, insufficient size of indoors), the White rhino enclosures, which are not big enough, the putrid wood fences of the Savanna outdoors, and the large (and even increasing) fluctuation of keepers. The outdated elephant enclosures could be treated as a problem, because on completion of the Biodome they will get a new enclosure complex.

-INDIAN ZONE

This zone’s belongings are the India House, the carnivore enclosures on the northern side of the Great Rock and the exhibits of tigers and leopards. The main problem is the insufficient size of most exhibits (especially Brown bear, Siberian tiger and Dholes). Carnivores are moved frequently between enclosures because of the changing of collection. This causes extra labour to the keepers, increasing quantity of stress for the animals, even though the carnivores could treat it like some enrichment.

-MONKEY WORLD

The parts of this zone are the Ape House, the Madagascar House and their surroundings. There are almost no problems, maybe the orangutan enclosure could be a bit larger, and the Ape House needs a reconstruction.

-MAGIC MOUNTAIN

This part is relatively new (finished in 2013), so it looks relatively good, not outdated. Generally, the area is less-visited, because there are almost no ABC animals.

-AUSTRALIA ZONE

This area is well-known even internationally because of its rarities and rich collection. The sewery system is especially old and in poor condition.

-XANTUS HOUSE

This building will be converted soon for South American taxa, after the majority of current inhabitants will be exhibited in the Biodome. Now the main problem is the outdoor of the Javan lutungs: it’s very small and too close to the railway.

-LITTLE ROCK

I don’t have any information about its condition, but well, the last reconstruction happened around 15 years ago… The polar bear enclosure is horrible.

-OTHERS

I could say almost nothing about them, so I wouldn’t go into useless explanations.

MAIN PROBLEMS

-PROBLEMS WITH THE BIODOME PROJECT

The idea of biodome was good, but the increasing costs took money from many other developments. Conflicting plans and a suspicion of corruption occured under the construction. The recognized director of the zoo, Prof. Miklós Persányi also forwented – probably because of these issues. According to a study, that ordered by the Municipality of Budapest, the biodome has been already constructed to such an extent, that it now must be completed.

-THE ZOO BECAME A POLITICAL THEATRE OF WAR

This case started with the growing budget of the biodome, the inauguration of the new director who plagiarized his degree just increased the tensions. The new director, Roland Szabó probably got the job because of his political relations. (He is a friend of a vice-mayor of Budapest.) After the scandal broke out on his degree, Szabó forwented from his position of director, but he is still a vice-director. The new competition for the job is undone yet, so Szabó de facto stayed in the director’s position.

-LOW WAGES, LACK OF EXPERTS

In 2019, the last year for which we have data, 41 employers resigned out of approx. 300. Out of the 10 skilled workmen of the Zoo (plumber, electrician etc.) 3 workplace remained empty for months and years because of the low wages. The solving of this problem is not the Zoo’s reach, this is the Municipal’s function. But the Municipal doesn’t have enough money to rise.

-OLD, BAD UTILITIES

This problem appeared two times in 2019: both the old boilers of America Tropicana and a sewery nearby the Australia House ruined. These cases had been solved at the last minutes.

-SLEAZY BUILDINGS

The big reconstruction ended ten years ago. The condition of buildings is getting worse. Rotten woodwork (Crocodile House, Australian Night, Savanna House and outdoor exhibit) can cause dangerous situations.

MAIN THINGS TO DO UNTIL 2030

-completion of the Biodome

-relocation of the Capital Circus, its place should be bought by the Zoo

-rebuilding of the sewery system

-installation of a noise barrier on the rail side

THE ZOO’S OWN DEVELOPMENTS UNTIL 2030

-
Biodome, deadline is 2025 now

-reconstruction of the former Coati enclosure behind the South American mixed exhibit (Tapir, Capybara etc.) for Tasmanian devils, deadline is the end of 2022

-reconstruction of the Owl Castle, deadline is early 2022

-rebuilding of the Xantus House for some South American species, reconstruction could only start after the Biodome gets ready, so deadline is unknown yet

Next part is about my plans by zones.

following part of the description is here!

PLANNED DEVELOPMENTS BY AREA

MONKEY WORLD

-MADAGASCAR HOUSE AND ITS SURROUNDING

The Madagascar House currently isn’t in bad condition, but the glass roof needs a washing, that could be done with industrial alpinist technique. The roof should be washed regularly.

Inhabitant-wise Black-and-White Ruffed lemurs should be moved to the main walkthru hall because of the orang exhibit’s future construction.

L’Hoest’s guenons will be moved to the current orang exhibit (together with Red river hogs) after the orangs’ new enclosure gets ready. The monument cage on the house’s easter side will receive new inhabitants: Ring-tailed mongooses.

Golden-bellied mangabeys should be moved to the gorilla exhibit. In their indoors Lake Alaotra bamboo lemurs could be housed.

Ring-tailed lemurs, Red ruffed lemurs, Day geckos and Duméril’s boas will stay in their current exhibits.

A new enclosure for Sumatran orangutans should be built instead of the current B+W ruffed lemur and Golden-bellied mangabey island. Together with orangs, some Siamangs could be exhibited. The Zoo should build them a separate indoor cage.

The Madagascar House’s indoors are too small for the orangs and Siamangs, which taxa live in Asia though. Based on this the Zoo needs to build a new house for them. This could be placed next to the outdoor exhibit, nearby the Little Rock. Because as many areas as possible are required, the Zoo must fill in the water moats between the two current islands, and on the southern side of the exhibit.

-CURRENT APE HOUSE (PLANNED WEST AFRICA HOUSE)

As far as I know, the indoors of the Ape House are outdated. Not in size, even not in exhibitry, but in looking. This house needs a lesser reconstruction.

After Sumatran orangutans moved to the Orang House, their current place will exhibit some West and Central African animals: L’Hoest’s guenons and Red river hogs.

SAVANNA ZONE

-SAVANNA HOUSE AND ITS SURROUNDING

Based on official plans, the Zoo’s White rhinos will be moved to another zoo. But the keeping of rhinos won’t stop, because it seems like two male Indian rhinos will be exhibited in the Biodome.

The Zoo could attach the current rhino paddocks to the Savanna Paddock. Two out of three rhino indoors could be converted into wintering place for Greater flamingos. Visitors will see the flamingos in winter, that is not possible currently.

One indoor remained: what could the Zoo do with it? Let’s make an exhibit for a species that never kept in Hungary: Sand cat.

Among the Savanna Paddock’s animals the Defassa waterbuck and the Nyalas are old, so. Both are from South Africa, whether Rotschild’s giraffes and Mhorr gazelles aren’t. Based on this the Zoo should replace them with North African species. I have two candidates (possible to keep both): the Ostrich (popular, missed by the visitors) and the Beisa oryx (rare in European zoos, although it started to spread in last few years).

The Zoo should replace the rotten wood fences of the outdoor exhibit.

-CURRENT ELEPHANT HOUSE AND CAPITAL CIRCUS (PLANNED ETHIOPIAN EXHIBIT COMPLEX)

The Elephant House, as it builded in 1912, is inadaquate for elephant holding. Fortunately the elephants will move to the Biodome.

The Government wants to build a new circus nearby Western Railway Station, in a former industrial zone. This means that the current place of the Circus will be empty. If the Zoo gets the area, 0,5 hectare (1,2 acre) gives a lot of opportunity for developments.

My idea is to build an Ethiopian exhibit complex onto the current area of the circus. The project consists of the following parts:

-Lake Tana Aviary: Nile hippos, wading birds, Situtungas(mixed species exhibit)

-Simien Aviary: Geladas, Hyraxes, Blue-winged geese, Vultures, Waldrapp(mixed species exhibit)

Predators of Ogaden: Caracals, Striped hyenas (separate exhibits)
