Chester Zoo Burmese brow antlered deer at Chester

One of my favourite animals, and i believe very underrated here.
The original group i believe came from Leipzig and Dresden, there is a batchelor herd at Knowsley safari park, made up of animals from the successful breeding herd at Chester.
But my point to this thread is what is the future for these lovely animals at Chester, has breeding stopped?
Have they a future at Chester?
Why are there no other collections in the UK showing an interest in them?, i realise Port Lympne attempted to breed them and were successful for a few years but with birthing in winter, success was limited and i think they simply gave up.

The last time I went to Chester, admittedly couple of years ago- there was no adult stag in the group. Only a couple of very young ones. Was he seperated, or dead? Is there one now? Do they still breed or what?

I agree they are beautiful deer- though not suitable as a 'showy' Safari Park species - perhaps one or two of the smaller zoo/wildlife parks might be interested in keeping some?

I do wonder how long the zoo will be keeping them and the Blackbuck in the Asian Plains exhibit? They do appear to be out and about in the paddock a lot more recently though. Pleased to hear they're still breeding.
I fully agree though, its a great shame not that many other collections have showed an interest in them.

The current herd is at least 12 strong, and the zoo`s has no plans in the foreseeable future to get rid of this species.

I agree; brow-antlered deer are a favourite of mine too.

Digressing from Chester Zoo; for many years Vincennes Zoo (Paris) had a group of the Siamese sub-species of brow-antlered deer. (This is the only place where I’ve ever seen this sub-species.)

I believe these Paris animals were all descended from a small group imported several decades ago, so they were very inbred.

Does anybody know if any specimens from the Paris stock remain?

Thank you. My question, though, was about the Siamese sub-species Cervus eldi siamensis.

I believe the remainder of the Paris herd was sent to their park at Obterre - ISIS now lists them as only holding two females.
