Calling All Sumatran Rhino Freaks....

But I have to say, this pictuures has shot a friend of me, he has visted some zoos in the States in the 90 tys and he gave me copies of the sumatran rhinos. The Barakas/Ipuh picture is a Trading Card fromt he Series " The World famous San Diego Zoo" from 1993.

My first trip to the stes was in 2002,on that journey, I've made a stopover on my way home in cincinnati to see the sumatran rhinos and the last...ZEBRADUIKER ! If Emi will give birth to another calf, and I hope she will,I will go to cincinnati again to see it ! I don't smoke,I don't drink,I don't drive a car, so I have money for zoo visits.

New News Message on asianrhino's.org.au. Appears that a male bornean Sumatran rhino wandered out of the forest into an palm plantation and has been captured and moved to Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Is this where the female Gelugob lives? Maybe then can pair them up, allthough the female might be a bit elderly allready?

Other then that, it appears that Andalas is still proving young and inexperienced, but they'll keep trying untill it'll work :)

I fear Gologob is a lost cause. She is pretty advanced in age now, and almost totally blind from being exposed to bright sunlight. As the only other captive of this subspecies (harissoni), this new male isn't going to be of much use, UNLESS they decided to incorporate him into the main Sumatran subspecies programme. Perhaps a very difficult choice to make but I imagine they would be reluctant to do that...

Perhaps he could be reïntroduced into the Tabin Wildlife Reserve? I don't know very much about this place, but apparantly it's quite a large reserve in which bornean sumatran rhino's allready live... probably going in and out of the reserve from adjacent forests.

It would be far better than keeping him in a captive situation for no purpose. Better for him to be still in the tiny wild population where he can still be able to breed. In captivity he will just be a waste.

with an such an endangered such as the sumatran many people ask if captive breeding is the best option..... then again much danger lies in the wil for them , Andalas is the best hope, unless they take in another young male.

This male is of the Bornean subspecies. They are in an even worse situation than the sumatran subspecies. The only other Bornean rhino in captivity is an old female 'Gologob'.

They are a truly unfortunate creature that deserve the up most attention I'm not even sure if any live in Kalimintan anymore, can any confirm this?

There are several pictures of Gologob in the gallery, if she is the female at Lok kawi.

I think that the subspecies mainly occurs in North east Borneo (Sabah)
