Today we at Wellington Zoo are devastated to pass on the news that our beautiful Sumatran Tiger, Cantik, has passed away.
Cantik was 21 years old and came to us in 1994. She was suffering from a malignant adrenal tumour along with painful arthritis, so the difficult decision was made to euthanise her.
We'd like to pay tribute to Cantik, whose legacy lives on in her son, Rokan. She was also an important part of the international conservation breeding programme for the critically endangered Sumatran Tigers, of which there are only approximately 300-400 left in the wild.
She will be greatly missed by all of us here at Wellington Zoo. Cantik means ‘beautiful’ in Indonesian, and beautiful (and feisty!) she was indeed.
