Sumatran Tiger, Cantik has passed away at Wellington Zoo at the grand old age of 21. RIP :(

Quote from Wellington's Facebook

Today we at Wellington Zoo are devastated to pass on the news that our beautiful Sumatran Tiger, Cantik, has passed away.

Cantik was 21 years old and came to us in 1994. She was suffering from a malignant adrenal tumour along with painful arthritis, so the difficult decision was made to euthanise her.

We'd like to pay tribute to Cantik, whose legacy lives on in her son, Rokan. She was also an important part of the international conservation breeding programme for the critically endangered Sumatran Tigers, of which there are only approximately 300-400 left in the wild.

She will be greatly missed by all of us here at Wellington Zoo. Cantik means ‘beautiful’ in Indonesian, and beautiful (and feisty!) she was indeed.

Wellington Zoo's sumatran tiger Cantik has died after suffering from a malignant tumour.

The zoo opted to euthanise the 21-year-old tiger last night, because invasive treatment for the adrenal tumour would have been risky due to her age and severe arthritis.

Life sciences manager Paul Horton said Cantik, who came to Wellington from the Netherlands in 1994, was loved by everyone.

"[She] has lived a long, full life here. Our staff and our partners at Pacific Radiology and Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital have done everything possible to ensure she received the best possible care throughout her illness.

"We know our visitors and community will be saddened by this news too and our thoughts are with them."

The zoo has been involved in an international breeding programme for Sumatran tigers, with Cantik mothering more than 20 tigers across Australasia.

Her son Rokan is now the remaining tiger at Wellington Zoo.
