Does any one know if there is any Cape Mountain Zebras kept in any zoos or safari parks in the world have looked on isis website none listed as far as i can see seems to be the only speceis not kept are they just to rare in the wild

I can't remember off the top of my head what zoos have them, but I know there's a number of them in captivity. They're on my must-see list of species I haven't seen yet. :)

There are definitely Hartmann's mountain zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae) but I don't think there are any Cape mountain zebra (Equus zebra zebra)

This is correct as far as I'm aware. If you want to see a Cape Mountain Zebra (and I certainly do, who wouldn't? :) ) then it's a flight to South Africa and rent a jeep I'm afraid.

Some day...!

London, and possibly some other big European Zoos like Berlin, have had them in the distant past. London has old b/w postcards which definately show Cape Mountan Zebra (stripes reach down to the belly unlike Hartmann's) but there are none in captivity now.

thanks everyone for getting back such a shame there is none around then are they much rarer than the hartmanns moutian zebra then

Yes your right london did have some had a look in the book i have London zoo from old photos 1852-1914 and there is two pictures in there of them

There is/was a (or more) Cape Mountain Zebra(s) in the Lichtenburg Breeding Centre in South Africa which is a dependance of the National Zoo in Pretoria.
But I don't know if this is what you are looking for (because the zebras are within their natural range).

I am off to Cape Town on holiday in April . It seems that Cape Mountain Zebras can be found in quite a few reserves in the area so it is one species I certainly hope to see .
Unfortunately it is the wrong season for Whale Watching and I am certainly not intending to go Great White Shark cage diving .

There appears to be a good Aquarium in Cape Town -The Two Oceans Aquarium - but no other particularly exciting captive collections . I am a bit wary about some of the safari attractions in the area - all of the large mammals they have are brought as they were hunted out from the area long ago .

Have any Zoochatters got experience of a visit ?

Why go to a zoo in South Africa if you have the wild? Try to visit Kruger National Park, and try to make a night game drive (guided or your own, in Kruger or elsewhere) to see some smaller mammals.

I agree but Kruger if a long way from Cape Town . I plan a visit to the Bontebok National Park which also has Cape Mountain Zebra .

Maybe you could arrange a visit to one or more of the Quagga Project's 'rebreeding' centres? It would be very interesting to have a factual update on their progress.

An interesting idea Pertinax . Have you any idea where these centres are ? I remember reading an article about a visit by David Barnaby , a UK equid expert , a few years ago . He knew the late instigator of the programme - I cannot remember his name .

The instigator was Reinhold Rau, the (or one of) centre is/was at Groote Schuur.

An old address (1996) for donations to the Quagga Project was:

The Quagga Project
South African Museum
PO Box 61
8000 Cape Town

Whether any of the aboe is still relevant is anyones guess.

No, but I know there is more than one. Maybe if you contacted the 'Quagga Project' (they have a website) direct they could help out.

So far they seem to be breeding increasingly stripeless Damara Zebras. I can't get really enthusiastic until/unless they start to revert to the 'true' Quagga colouration and markings- which were NOT the same as what they have got so far.

I have had a look at The Quagga Project web-site which is still active with the last report dated June 2009 . Sees there are now 98 animals in the project held in 12 locations , all seem to be private farms . There is nothing to say that any of these places offer public viewing .

I tend to agree with Pertinax in that what they are breeding are Damara Zebras with fewer stripes which might end up looking similar to a Quagga .
